Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Bighorn Sheep Hunt Area 7

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names bighorn sheep hunt area 7 "Jackson". It runs to about 1,662 square miles, in Teton (63%), Sublette (30%) and Lincoln (5%) counties. WGFD reports these bighorn sheep as the Jackson herd unit, and no other hunt area shares it. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the bighorn sheep live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.

The line: Togwotee Pass, Continental Divide and Union Pass

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 9 walks the line around bighorn sheep hunt area 7 corner by corner. It starts at Togwotee Pass on the Continental Divide. On the way round it follows U.S.F.S. Road 600, U.S. Highway 191, Wyoming Highway 22 and U.S. Highway 26-287, and Togwotee Pass, Continental Divide, Union Pass and Wagon Creek. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 6 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 3.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 7s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 7 also belongs to its elk, deer, antelope and moose hunt areas 7. Only the moose area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the bighorn sheep area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Horse Creek and Teton

WGFD administers 6 Wildlife Habitat Management Areas inside or across the line, including Horse Creek (332 acres), Teton (974 acres) and Camp Creek (149 acres). Public Access Areas such as Von Gontard Landing (28 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.

Wilderness inside the line: Gros Ventre Wilderness

About 27% of bighorn sheep hunt area 7 lies in the Gros Ventre Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.

High ground inside the line: Doubletop Peak, Darwin Peak and Black Peak

Named high points inside bighorn sheep hunt area 7 include Doubletop Peak at 11,663 feet, Darwin Peak at 11,634 feet, Black Peak at 11,618 feet, Triangle Peak at 11,478 feet and Gros Ventre Range at 11,396 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Sheep need rock to escape into and will not stand far from it.

Holding ground: Bare Hole, Coyote Basin and Pia Tsiambe Basin

Below them sit Bare Hole at 9,557 feet, Coyote Basin at 9,412 feet, Pia Tsiambe Basin at 9,409 feet, Two Echo Park at 9,361 feet and Sheridan Pass at 9,251 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for bighorn sheep in bighorn sheep hunt area 7, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any bighorn sheep), residents: 398 first-choice applicants for 2 licenses, 0.5% drawn
  • Type 6 (ewe or lamb), residents: 339 first-choice applicants for 18 licenses, 5.3% drawn

WGFD draws full-price bighorn sheep licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your bighorn sheep points, and after a full-price bighorn sheep license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. There are 1 more type-and-residency rows for this area in 2026. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
