Where to Find Elk in Elk Hunt Area 7
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names elk hunt area 7 "Laramie Peak". It runs to about 4,042 square miles, in Albany (48%), Converse (28%), Platte (21%) and Carbon (3%) counties. WGFD reports these elk as the Laramie Peak/Muddy Mountain herd unit, which also takes in elk hunt area 19. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the elk stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.
The line: Deer Creek, North Platte River and Little Medicine Bow River
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 7 walks the line around elk hunt area 7 corner by corner. It starts at the confluence of Deer Creek and the North Platte River in the town of Glenrock. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 26, Interstate Highway 25, Wyoming Highway 34 and U.S. Highway 30-287, and Deer Creek, North Platte River, Little Medicine Bow River and Shirley Ridge. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 9 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 7s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 7 also belongs to its deer, antelope, moose and bighorn sheep hunt areas 7. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the elk area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Tom Thorne/Beth Williams and Laramie Peak
WGFD administers 3 Wildlife Habitat Management Areas inside or across the line, including Tom Thorne/Beth Williams (2,961 acres), Laramie Peak (37,114 acres) and North Glendo (2,663 acres). Its Access Yes program enrolls 11 Hunter Management Areas here that list elk among their species — Mule Creek (4,517 acres), Shirley Basin (36,673 acres) and Menter Knob (10,003 acres). WGFD also lists 13 Walk-In Areas covering about 62,363 acres open for elk, among them Converse 6, Converse 11 and Converse 4. WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise.
High ground inside the line: Laramie Peak, Warbonnet Peak and Buffalo Peak
Named high points inside elk hunt area 7 include Laramie Peak at 10,213 feet, Warbonnet Peak at 9,373 feet, Buffalo Peak at 9,370 feet, Cherry Mountain at 9,304 feet and Roaring Mountain at 9,296 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Elk want timber to bed in and open ground to feed on, within a short walk of each other.
Holding ground: Reed Pass, Cameron Pass and Indian Flat
Below them sit Reed Pass at 7,848 feet, Cameron Pass at 7,799 feet, Indian Flat at 7,796 feet, Breakneck Hill at 7,757 feet and Bull Gap at 7,741 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.
Unit 007 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up · figures are for GMU 7
The lay of it
- 4,732–8,321 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 6,520 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 4,039.9 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 32%
Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 219 tanks
- 3 springs
- 395 stream segments
- 60 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Laramie Peak (10,213 ft), Warbonnet Peak (9,373 ft), Buffalo Peak (9,370 ft), Cherry Mountain (9,304 ft)
Holding ground: Fackler Pass (8,616 ft), Devils Pass (8,203 ft), Ellison Pass (8,159 ft), Laramie Peak WHMA, Shirley Basin Hunter Management Area
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

| Rifle — General Type 4 antlerless (nonresident) | 30 | 0 | 100.0% | — |
Data from 2026 draw results. Each row is one residency pool — read the label before the number. This agency publishes no point thresholds, so the Pts column stays blank and these are pool odds, not what a point total draws.
Open in Draw Odds EngineWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for elk in elk hunt area 7, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1 (any elk), residents: 3,149 first-choice applicants for 1,024 licenses, 32.5% drawn
- Type 1 (any elk), nonresidents: 1,006 first-choice applicants for 23 licenses, 2.3% drawn
- Type 2 (any elk), residents: 455 first-choice applicants for 413 licenses, 90.8% drawn
- Type 2 (any elk), nonresidents: 73 first-choice applicants for 11 licenses, 15.1% drawn
Wyoming residents draw elk licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
