Where to Find Mule Deer in Deer Hunt Area 7
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names deer hunt area 7 "South Osage". It runs to about 426 square miles, entirely in Weston County. WGFD reports these mule deer as the Cheyenne River herd unit, which also takes in deer hunt areas 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 21. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the mule deer live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.
Where deer hunt area 7 begins and ends
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 6 defines deer hunt area 7 as beginning at the junction of U.S. Highway 16 and Wyoming Highway 450; southwesterly along Wyoming Highway 450 to Wyoming Highway 116; northerly along said highway to U.S. Highway 16 in the town of Upton; southeasterly along said highway to Wyoming Highway 450. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 7 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 7s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 7 also belongs to its elk, antelope, moose and bighorn sheep hunt areas 7. Only the antelope area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the deer area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Weston 2 and Weston 9
WGFD also lists 5 Walk-In Areas covering about 19,612 acres open for deer, among them Weston 2, Weston 9 and Weston 8. WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise.
High ground inside the line: Soda Butte
Named high points inside deer hunt area 7 include Soda Butte at 4,638 feet. None of them carries a public-land flag we trust, so settle ownership before you plan to stand on one. Mule deer on open country use every fold and draw there is, and almost none of the flat.
Holding ground: Bates Draw, Benhart Draw and Slagle Draw
Below them sit Bates Draw at 4,094 feet, Benhart Draw at 4,052 feet, Slagle Draw at 3,992 feet, Sixmile Basin at 3,937 feet and Luce Draw at 3,931 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.
Reading the land status
Named ground inside deer hunt area 7 runs from 3,931 feet to 4,638 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.
