Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Bighorn Sheep Hunt Area 4

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names bighorn sheep hunt area 4 "Yount's Peak". It runs to about 1,327 square miles, in Teton (43%), Fremont (30%) and Park (27%) counties. WGFD reports these bighorn sheep as the Absaroka herd unit, which also takes in bighorn sheep hunt areas 1, 2, 3, 5 and 22. The boundary and the harvest figures are WGFD's. The read of the country inside them is ours, and it says so where it starts.

The line: Deer Creek, South Fork and Shoshone River

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 9 walks the line around bighorn sheep hunt area 4 corner by corner. It starts where Deer Creek enters the South Fork of the Shoshone River. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 287, and Deer Creek, South Fork, Shoshone River and Needle Creek. That is a legal description, not a habitat map, and it is the text a warden reads you against. The full text is in Section 6 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 3.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 4s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 4 also belongs to its deer, antelope and mountain goat hunt areas 4. Only the mountain goat area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the bighorn sheep area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Wilderness inside the line: Teton Wilderness and Washakie Wilderness

About 60% of bighorn sheep hunt area 4 lies in the Teton Wilderness and 23% of bighorn sheep hunt area 4 lies in the Washakie Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.

High ground inside the line: Red Tops, Younts Peak and Thorofare Mountain

Named high points inside bighorn sheep hunt area 4 include Red Tops at 12,157 feet, Younts Peak at 12,100 feet, Thorofare Mountain at 12,015 feet, Crater Mountain at 12,008 feet and Lost Ranger Top at 11,929 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Sheep need rock to escape into and will not stand far from it.

Holding ground: Jules Bowl, Hidden Basin and Shoshone Pass

Below them sit Jules Bowl at 9,928 feet, Hidden Basin at 9,730 feet, Shoshone Pass at 9,655 feet, Bear Cub Pass at 9,469 feet and Basin Creek Meadows at 9,384 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.

Water: Soda Springs, Bartrand Spring and North Fork Falls

Named water inside the line includes Soda Springs, Bartrand Spring, North Fork Falls, Lake Fork Falls, Twilight Falls and Big Springs. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for bighorn sheep in bighorn sheep hunt area 4, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any ram), residents: 431 first-choice applicants for 4 licenses, 0.9% drawn
  • Type 1 (any ram), nonresidents: 41 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn

WGFD draws full-price bighorn sheep licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your bighorn sheep points, and after a full-price bighorn sheep license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
