Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Bighorn Sheep Hunt Area 22
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names bighorn sheep hunt area 22 "Dubois Badlands". It runs to about 135 square miles, entirely in Fremont County. WGFD reports these bighorn sheep as the Absaroka herd unit, which also takes in bighorn sheep hunt areas 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the bighorn sheep stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.
The line: Wind River, Wiggins Fork and East Fork
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 9 walks the line around bighorn sheep hunt area 22 corner by corner. It starts where U.S. Highway 287 crosses the Wind River Reservation boundary. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 287 and Fremont County Road 285, and Wind River, Wiggins Fork and East Fork. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 6 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 3.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 22s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 22 also belongs to its elk, deer, antelope and moose hunt areas 22. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the bighorn sheep area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Kirk Inberg/Kevin Roy and Spence & Moriarity
WGFD administers 2 Wildlife Habitat Management Areas inside or across the line, including Kirk Inberg/Kevin Roy (17,280 acres) and Spence & Moriarity (35,872 acres). Public Access Areas such as Wind River-Painted Hills and Wind River-Landen (1 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.
High ground inside the line: Spring Mountain, E A Mountain and Black Mountain
Named high points inside bighorn sheep hunt area 22 include Spring Mountain at 8,918 feet, E A Mountain at 8,483 feet, Black Mountain at 8,338 feet, Windy Ridge at 8,164 feet and Table Mountain at 8,141 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Sheep need rock to escape into and will not stand far from it.
Holding ground: Horse Draw, Lake Draw and Mason Draw
Below them sit Horse Draw at 7,200 feet, Lake Draw at 6,978 feet, Mason Draw at 6,830 feet, Carson Draw at 6,777 feet and Harvey Draw at 6,755 feet. Those are the basins and bottoms of the area, and they are what you glass into from above.
Reading the land status
Named ground inside bighorn sheep hunt area 22 runs from 6,648 feet to 8,918 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.

Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Success Rates
WGFD's 2025 harvest report carries no bighorn sheep row we can read back to bighorn sheep hunt area 22 on its own, so no figure is given here — a statewide average printed under this heading would look measured and would not be. WGFD's harvest reports page has the full tables.

Search Wyoming Draw OddsWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for bighorn sheep in bighorn sheep hunt area 22, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1 (any ram), residents: 73 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
WGFD draws full-price bighorn sheep licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your bighorn sheep points, and after a full-price bighorn sheep license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
