Where to Find Moose in Moose Hunt Area 5
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names moose hunt area 5 "Upper Green River". It runs to about 658 square miles, entirely in Sublette County. WGFD reports these moose as the Sublette herd unit, which also takes in moose hunt areas 3, 10, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. The boundary and the harvest figures are WGFD's. The read of the country inside them is ours, and it says so where it starts.
The line: Green River, Hoback River and Gros Ventre River
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 8 walks the line around moose hunt area 5 corner by corner. It starts where U.S. Highway 191 crosses the Green River at Warren Bridge. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 191, U.S.F.S. Road 620 and U.S.F.S. Road 600, and Green River, Hoback River, Gros Ventre River and Hodges Peak. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 5s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 5 also belongs to its deer, antelope, bighorn sheep and mountain goat hunt areas 5. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the moose area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Public Access Areas
Public Access Areas such as Green River-Warren Bridge # 2 (40 acres) and Green River-Warren Bridge Parking Area # 8,9 (95 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.
Wilderness inside the line: Bridger Wilderness and Gros Ventre Wilderness
About 37% of moose hunt area 5 lies in the Bridger Wilderness and 6% of moose hunt area 5 lies in the Gros Ventre Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.
High ground inside the line: Dinwoody Peak, Mount Woodrow Wilson and Bastion Peak
Named high points inside moose hunt area 5 include Dinwoody Peak at 13,497 feet, Mount Woodrow Wilson at 13,467 feet, Bastion Peak at 13,454 feet, Flagstone Peak at 13,418 feet and Rampart Peak at 13,372 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Moose want willow, water and shade, and they rarely leave the drainage that has all three.
Holding ground: Bear Basin, Cube Rock Pass and Porcupine Pass
Below them sit Bear Basin at 11,259 feet, Cube Rock Pass at 10,718 feet, Porcupine Pass at 10,705 feet, Green River Pass at 10,369 feet and Vista Pass at 10,133 feet. Those are the basins and bottoms of the area, and they are what you glass into from above.

Moose Draw Odds
| Season | Tags | Applicants | Draw % | Pts (n/p) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rifle — General Type 1 antlered (resident) | 4 | 334 | 1.2% | — |
| Rifle — General Type 1 antlered (nonresident) | 0 | 27 | 0.0% | — |
Data from 2026 draw results. Each row is one residency pool — read the label before the number. This agency publishes no point thresholds, so the Pts column stays blank and these are pool odds, not what a point total draws.
Open in Draw Odds EngineWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for moose in moose hunt area 5, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1 (antlered moose), residents: 334 first-choice applicants for 4 licenses, 1.2% drawn
- Type 1 (antlered moose), nonresidents: 27 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
WGFD draws full-price moose licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your moose points, and after an any or antlered moose license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
