Where to Find Moose in Moose Hunt Area 3

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names moose hunt area 3 "Pinedale". It runs to about 1,247 square miles, entirely in Sublette County. WGFD reports these moose as the Sublette herd unit, which also takes in moose hunt areas 5, 10, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the moose stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.

The line: Continental Divide, Big Sandy River and East Green River

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 8 walks the line around moose hunt area 3 corner by corner. It starts on the Continental Divide at the head of the Big Sandy River. On the way round it follows Sublette County Road 23, U.S. Highway 191 and Wyoming Highway 351, and Continental Divide, Big Sandy River, East Green River and Green River. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 3s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 3 also belongs to its elk, deer, antelope, bighorn sheep and mountain goat hunt areas 3. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the moose area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Half Moon and Soda Lake

WGFD administers 5 Wildlife Habitat Management Areas inside or across the line, including Half Moon (3,761 acres), Soda Lake (4,115 acres) and Luke Lynch (362 acres). Its Access Yes program enrolls a Hunter Management Area here that list moose among their species — Chimey Butte (1,569 acres). WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise. Public Access Areas such as New Fork River-Remmick (9 acres) and Green River-Huston (30 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.

Wilderness inside the line: Bridger Wilderness

About 28% of moose hunt area 3 lies in the Bridger Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.

High ground inside the line: Fremont Peak, Mount Helen and Henderson Peak

Named high points inside moose hunt area 3 include Fremont Peak at 13,713 feet, Mount Helen at 13,537 feet, Henderson Peak at 13,064 feet, Bow Mountain at 12,978 feet and Knife Point Mountain at 12,963 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Moose want willow, water and shade, and they rarely leave the drainage that has all three.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for moose in moose hunt area 3, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (antlered moose), residents: 346 first-choice applicants for 3 licenses, 0.9% drawn
  • Type 1 (antlered moose), nonresidents: 19 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn

WGFD draws full-price moose licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your moose points, and after an any or antlered moose license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
