Where to Find Moose in Moose Hunt Area 25

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names moose hunt area 25 "Big Piney-Off National Forest", though its own map layer still labels it Big Piney - Off National Forest. It runs to about 1,492 square miles, almost all of it in Sublette County. WGFD reports these moose as the Sublette herd unit, which also takes in moose hunt areas 3, 5, 10, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24. The boundary and the harvest figures are WGFD's. The read of the country inside them is ours, and it says so where it starts.

The line: Green River, Hoback River and East Green River

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 8 walks the line around moose hunt area 25 corner by corner. It starts where U.S. Highway 191 crosses the divide between the Green River and the Hoback River (Hoback Rim). On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 191, Sublette County Road 23, Wyoming Highway 351 and B.L.M. Road 5406, and Green River, Hoback River, East Green River and Yellow Point. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 25s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 25 also belongs to its elk, deer and antelope hunt areas 25. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the moose area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Public Access Areas

Public Access Areas such as Green River-Huston (30 acres) and Green River-Daniel/40 Rod (80 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.

High ground inside the line: Lake Mountain, Trail Ridge and Reed Ridge

Named high points inside moose hunt area 25 include Lake Mountain at 9,453 feet, Trail Ridge at 9,268 feet, Reed Ridge at 9,146 feet, Round Hill at 9,031 feet and Hogsback Ridge at 9,009 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Moose want willow, water and shade, and they rarely leave the drainage that has all three.

Holding ground: Watson Draw, Black Canyon and Haines Flat

Below them sit Watson Draw at 7,736 feet, Black Canyon at 7,724 feet, Haines Flat at 7,665 feet, Red Canyon at 7,641 feet and Deloney Canyon at 7,599 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.

Reading the land status

Named ground inside moose hunt area 25 runs from 6,538 feet to 9,453 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for moose in moose hunt area 25, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (antlered moose), residents: 617 first-choice applicants for 9 licenses, 1.5% drawn
  • Type 1 (antlered moose), nonresidents: 600 first-choice applicants for 1 license, 0.2% drawn
  • Type 4, residents: 73 first-choice applicants for 1 license, 1.4% drawn

WGFD draws full-price moose licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your moose points, and after an any or antlered moose license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
