Where to Find White-Tailed Deer in Deer Hunt Area 8

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names deer hunt area 8 "Upton-Four Horse". It runs to about 563 square miles, in Weston (90%) and Crook (8%) counties. WGFD reports these white-tailed deer as the Central herd unit, which also takes in deer hunt areas 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 21 and 7 more. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the white-tailed deer stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.

The line: Black Thunder Creek, Bacon Creek and Cheyenne River

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 6 walks the line around deer hunt area 8 corner by corner. It starts at the junction of Wyoming Highway 116 and Wyoming Highway 450. On the way round it follows Wyoming Highway 116, Wyoming Highway 450, U.S.F.S. Road 930 and Interstate Highway 90, and Black Thunder Creek, Bacon Creek, Cheyenne River and Belle Fourche River Divide. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 7 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 8s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 8 also belongs to its elk, antelope, moose and bighorn sheep hunt areas 8. Only the antelope area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the deer area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Weston 15

WGFD also lists one Walk-In Area covering about 4,778 acres open for deer: Weston 15. WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise.

High ground inside the line: Chalk Butte, Goose Butte and Spy Glass Hill

Named high points inside deer hunt area 8 include Chalk Butte at 4,928 feet, Goose Butte at 4,838 feet and Spy Glass Hill at 4,574 feet. None of them carries a public-land flag we trust, so settle ownership before you plan to stand on one. White-tailed deer on farm country live in the cover strips between fields and feed out at the edges of the day.

Holding ground: Madren Draw, Coal Draw and Alkali Draw

Below them sit Madren Draw at 4,389 feet, Coal Draw at 4,377 feet, Alkali Draw at 4,362 feet, Wildcat Draw at 4,359 feet and Butler Draw at 4,347 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.

Reading the land status

Named ground inside deer hunt area 8 runs from 4,221 feet to 4,928 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.
