Where to Find Mule Deer in Deer Hunt Area 10

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names deer hunt area 10 "Rochelle Hills". It runs to about 857 square miles, in Converse (51%), Campbell (31%), Weston (11%) and Niobrara (7%) counties. WGFD reports these mule deer as the Cheyenne River herd unit, which also takes in deer hunt areas 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 21. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the mule deer stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.

The line: North Lance Creek, Cow Creek and Walker Creek

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 6 walks the line around deer hunt area 10 corner by corner. It starts at the junction of Wyoming Highway 59 and Wyoming Highway 450. On the way round it follows Wyoming Highway 59, Wyoming Highway 450, Converse County Road 39 and Weston County Road 7A, and North Lance Creek, Cow Creek, Walker Creek and Dry Creek. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 7 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 10s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 10 also belongs to its elk, antelope, moose and bighorn sheep hunt areas 10. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the deer area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Converse 12 and Converse 14

WGFD also lists 2 Walk-In Areas covering about 6,725 acres open for deer, among them Converse 12 and Converse 14. WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise.

High ground inside the line: Black Butte, Gray Butte and Miller Hills

Named high points inside deer hunt area 10 include Black Butte at 5,098 feet, Gray Butte at 5,063 feet, Miller Hills at 5,004 feet, Cow Creek Buttes at 4,918 feet and Red Hills at 4,758 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Mule deer on open country use every fold and draw there is, and almost none of the flat.

Holding ground: Windy Draw, Boss Draw and Philips Draw

Below them sit Windy Draw at 4,743 feet, Boss Draw at 4,737 feet, Philips Draw at 4,712 feet, Frey Draw at 4,709 feet and Piney Canyon at 4,680 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.

Reading the land status

Named ground inside deer hunt area 10 runs from 4,221 feet to 5,098 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for mule deer in deer hunt area 10, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1, nonresidents: 92 first-choice applicants for 1 license, 1.1% drawn
  • Type 3, residents: 48 first-choice applicants for 18 licenses, 37.5% drawn

WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
