Where to Find Deer in the Poverty Basin 01 Hunt Area: Beatys Butte to Wagontire

A very large block of open desert

The boundary strings together Hwy 140, Hart Mountain boundary roads, Hwy 395, Valley Falls, the Christmas Valley Highway, Jack Mountain Road and Hwy 205. That's a lot of country. Beatys Butte, Mahogany Butte, Mahogany Mountain, Shirks Lookout and Juniper Mountain are the high marks, and most of it is public land. Burns, Hines, Paisley and Valley Falls are the closest towns, and all of them are a long drive.

What ODFW reports

ODFW's Harney County forecast says buck ratios exceed objective in all of its deer hunt areas, though populations sit below objective after a drought year. For the Wagontire side, it reports a good number of mature bucks with strong horn growth and the highest fawn ratio on record in North Wagontire. That note covers Wagontire, so don't read it as a promise for the whole area. Knapper Camp and Peters Creek are named camps.

Break the block into its three WMU shares before you plan: Juniper, Wagontire and Beatys Butte. Pick one and learn it instead of driving across all three and seeing none of them well. Use the named buttes as glassing stations and write down every water source you pass.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's Deer Hunt Area PB-01 covers about 4,401 square miles measured on ODFW's own polygon, and ODFW rates it 87% public land. It takes in parts of these WMUs: Juniper (about 37%), Wagontire (about 35%) and Beatys Butte (about 28%). Named features inside the line fall in Harney County and Lake County. Elevation runs from about 4,259 to 7,915 feet. The highest named points are Beatys Butte (7,915 ft), Mahogany Butte (7,106 ft) and Mahogany Mountain (6,825 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit PB-01 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 4,259–5,446 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,921 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 4,401.4 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • BLM — 15%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 77%

Roughly 23% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 421 tanks
  • 8 springs
  • 1,575 stream segments
  • 127 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Mahogany Butte (7,106 ft), Shirks Lookout (6,800 ft), Juniper Mountain (6,678 ft), Bald Mountain (6,569 ft)

Holding ground: Mustang Basin (6,270 ft), Buckaroo Pass (5,870 ft), Sage Hen Flats (5,845 ft), Dwayne Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

How to Hunt Deer in the Poverty Basin 01 Hunt Area: slow glassing over big country

Look at many bucks

ODFW's advice for the Wagontire bucks is to take your time and look over several. In open desert, that means a spotting scope, a high vantage and patience. Glass from a butte at first light, then drop to the next one. Don't chase the first buck you see.

Distances are huge, so plan fuel, water and a spare tire before you leave pavement.

Fire and water rules

ODFW says the district is in moderate to severe drought and tall grass can ignite under a hot exhaust, so park on bare ground. Some closures remain from summer fires. Check BLM and the Oregon Department of Forestry before you go. Animals use water and edge cover, so concentrate your glassing near springs and along the edges of the juniper ridges, and hunt the cool hours of morning and evening. A bow hunt runs here too, and it asks for even more patience.

Carry more water than you think you need. Springs can be dry in a drought year, and the nearest town is far.

ODFW's 2026 buck deer hunts on this ground

Seasons, bag limits and tags come from ODFW's 2026 regulations. Check the current book before you apply or go, because these change every year.

  • PB101 Poverty Basin 01, Oct. 3 - Oct. 14: 138 tags, one buck with visible antler.
  • PB101R Poverty Basin 01 Bow: see ODFW's table in the 2026 regulations for the season and tag count.

The 2025 harvest in ODFW's numbers

ODFW has no harvest figures on the new hunt areas yet. Its 2025 statistics are by WMU, for all deer hunters, every season and tag type, so these are the units this area was drawn from, and each covers more or less ground than the area does.

  • Juniper (about 37% of this area): 144 hunters, 40 animals, 28% success over 688 hunter days.
  • Wagontire (about 35% of this area): 108 hunters, 44 animals, 41% success over 547 hunter days.
  • Beatys butte (about 28% of this area): 110 hunters, 57 animals, 52% success over 494 hunter days.

Oregon rules that decide your day

Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Motorized retrieval

Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.

Tagging

Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.

Leaving meat

Wasting edible meat is illegal.

Where you may not shoot

  • Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.

Deer (Buck): where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

  • Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
  • Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
  • Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.

Deer (Buck) Success Rates

Unit 71: 40 of 144 hunters, 28%; Unit 73: 44 of 108 hunters, 41%; Unit 70: 57 of 110 hunters, 52%. Figures are ODFW's own 2025 harvest statistics, by WMU, because the new hunt areas have no history yet.

ODFW's eastern deer hunts carry new numbers from 2026, so the regulations list them as NEW, with no applicant history to quote. Treat any older WMU draw figures as a different hunt.
