Where to Find Pronghorn in the Wagontire Unit: Glass Buttes, Coglan Buttes and the open country between

The boundary, in county-road terms

ODFW's line starts on Highway 20, east of Millican, runs southeast to US 395, then southwest to Valley Falls on Highway 31. It goes northwest on that highway to a county road east of Silver Lake and then northeast to Christmas Valley, and finally north along a string of Lake County roads past Janes Well and Dickerson Well to Highway 20. ODFW says the part north of Lake County Road 5-14 is mostly public land.

Buttes on a high plain

The named high points are Wagontire Mountain, Glass Butte, Coglan Buttes and Little Glass Butte, from about 6,200 to 6,500 feet. The named range starts at roughly 4,307 feet. The unit sits on a plateau, so the buttes are landmarks you'll use to navigate. Knapper Camp, Peters Creek Campground and Ana River Campground are the named places to stay. Paisley and Valley Falls are the closest towns on the map. Counties are Lake, Deschutes and Harney. Paisley, Valley Falls, Hines and Burns are the named towns, though all are a long drive from the middle of the unit, so fill your tank and carry spare water and food before you leave pavement. Don't count on cell service.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

The Wagontire Unit, WMU 73, covers about 3,109 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 85% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Lake County, Deschutes County and Harney County. Elevation runs from about 4,259 to 6,507 feet. The highest named points are Wagontire Mountain (6,507 ft), Glass Butte (6,361 ft) and Glass Buttes (6,361 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit 73 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 4,259–4,942 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,622 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 3,108.3 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • BLM — 15%
  • Private / Other — 85%

Roughly 15% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 56 tanks
  • 2 springs
  • 112 stream segments
  • 28 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Glass Butte (6,361 ft), Coglan Buttes (6,201 ft), Little Glass Butte (6,178 ft), Diablo Peak (6,136 ft)

Holding ground: Hogback Summit (4,997 ft), Paiute Lake (4,964 ft), Little Benjamin Lake (4,940 ft)

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
