Where to Find Pronghorn in the Beatys Butte Unit: the Hart Mountain refuge edge and the Guano Valley rim
Denio, Plush and Fields
The boundary runs west from Denio along the Nevada line to the Fort Bidwell-Warner Valley road, north through Adel and Plush, then east to the Hart refuge and across to Catlow Valley Road. It returns south through Fields to Denio. Pueblo Mountain is the high point at 8615 feet, and Warner Peak, Hart Mountain and Beatys Butte each top 7900. The lowest ground sits around 4239 feet. Fields Basin-Rincon Road and the county roads 3-10 and 3-12 are the main ways in.
Two kinds of pronghorn ground
ODFW's hunt descriptions cut the unit with a line that starts at the East Guano Valley Rim on the Nevada border and runs north to Highway 140. The east and west halves have different public-land makeup, so check which side your tag covers. The separate Hart Mountain hunts apply to the Hart Mountain refuge, which has scattered private inholdings where you need landowner permission. Post Meadows and Camp Hart Mountain are the named campgrounds. Valley Falls, Lakeview and Cedarville are the closest towns, and all of them are a long drive away. Rincon Road and County Road 3-12 are the named routes across the basin. Fill up and carry spare water.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
The Beatys Butte Unit, WMU 70, covers about 2,626 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 82% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Harney County and Lake County. Elevation runs from about 4,239 to 8,615 feet. The highest named points are Pueblo Mountain (8,615 ft), Warner Peak (8,014 ft) and Hart Mountain (8,014 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 70 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4,485–7,074 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,264 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 2,625.8 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 77%
Roughly 23% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 691 tanks
- 121 springs
- 1,306 stream segments
- 142 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Pueblo Mountain (8,615 ft), Hawks Mountain (7,229 ft), Mahogany Butte (7,106 ft), Lone Mountain (6,896 ft)
Holding ground: Ten Cent Meadows (6,958 ft), Oleachea Pass (6,746 ft), Propeller Meadows (6,501 ft), Hogback Well
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
