Where to Find Pronghorn in the Juniper Unit: Juniper Mountain, Frenchglen and the Hart Mountain refuge
Burns to Frenchglen to Hogback Road
The boundary starts at Burns, runs east on Highway 78 to Highway 205, and goes south through Frenchglen to Hart Mountain Road. It follows Flagstaff Lake Road and Hogback Road northwest to US 395, then returns northeast on US 395 and east on US 20. Juniper Mountain, Grays Butte, Little Juniper Mountain and Horsehead Mountain are the named high points. The low ground sits around 4088 feet.
Public ground and the refuge
ODFW's main hunt description calls the unit mostly public. It excludes the Hart Mountain refuge and the part of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge north of Foster Flat Road. The separate Hart Mountain hunts apply to the refuge itself, where scattered private inholdings require landowner permission. Riley Store RV Park and Hines RV & Mobile Home Park are the nearest listed camps, and Jack Mountain Road, Rock Creek Lane and County Road 3-10 give the main road access. Hines, Burns, Valley Falls and Paisley are the closest towns, with OR 205 and US 395 as the main highways. Expect long gravel drives between them and the buttes, and check the weather before you leave. Carry extra water.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
The Juniper Unit, WMU 71, covers about 2,920 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 89% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Harney County and Lake County. Elevation runs from about 4,088 to 6,678 feet. The highest named points are Juniper Mountain (6,678 ft), Grays Butte (6,159 ft) and Little Juniper Mountain (6,114 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 71 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4,088–5,535 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,714 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 2,920.1 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 77%
Roughly 23% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 399 tanks
- 3 springs
- 1,528 stream segments
- 124 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
