Where to Find Moose in Moose Hunt Area 20
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names moose hunt area 20 "Fall Creek-Targhee", though its own map layer still labels it Fall Creek - Targee. It runs to about 315 square miles, in Teton (67%) and Lincoln (33%) counties. WGFD reports these moose as the Sublette herd unit, which also takes in moose hunt areas 3, 5, 10, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the moose live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.
The line: Snake River and Teton Pass
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 8 walks the line around moose hunt area 20 corner by corner. It starts at the junction of Wyoming Highway 22 and Wyoming Highway 390 west of the Snake River. On the way round it follows Wyoming Highway 22 and Wyoming Highway 390, and Snake River and Teton Pass. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 20s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 20 also belongs to its antelope and bighorn sheep hunt areas 20. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the moose area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: South Park
WGFD administers the South Park Wildlife Habitat Management Area (1,006 acres) inside or across the line.
High ground inside the line: Rendezvous Mountain, Rendezvous Peak and Mount Glory
Named high points inside moose hunt area 20 include Rendezvous Mountain at 10,905 feet, Rendezvous Peak at 10,884 feet, Mount Glory at 10,071 feet, Snake River Range at 9,955 feet and Observation Peak at 9,955 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Moose want willow, water and shade, and they rarely leave the drainage that has all three.
Holding ground: Long Spring Basin, Smoky Hollow and Deadhorse Canyon
Below them sit Long Spring Basin at 7,377 feet, Smoky Hollow at 7,303 feet, Deadhorse Canyon at 7,286 feet, Middle Fork Phillips Canyon at 7,245 feet and Glory Slide at 7,088 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.
Reading the land status
Named ground inside moose hunt area 20 runs from 5,606 feet to 10,905 feet — more than 4,000 feet between the named features alone, so the season you draw decides which part of it you hunt.

Moose Draw Odds
| Season | Tags | Applicants | Draw % | Pts (n/p) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rifle — General Type 1 antlered (resident) | 3 | 176 | 1.7% | — |
| Rifle — General Type 1 antlered (nonresident) | 0 | 41 | 0.0% | — |
Data from 2026 draw results. Each row is one residency pool — read the label before the number. This agency publishes no point thresholds, so the Pts column stays blank and these are pool odds, not what a point total draws.
Open in Draw Odds EngineWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for moose in moose hunt area 20, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1 (antlered moose), residents: 176 first-choice applicants for 3 licenses, 1.7% drawn
- Type 1 (antlered moose), nonresidents: 41 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
WGFD draws full-price moose licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your moose points, and after an any or antlered moose license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
