Where to Find Mule Deer in Deer Hunt Area 100
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names deer hunt area 100 "South Wamsutter". It runs to about 1,775 square miles, in Sweetwater (72%) and Carbon (28%) counties. WGFD reports these mule deer as the Baggs herd unit, which also takes in deer hunt areas 82 and 84. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the mule deer stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.
The line: Cow Creek and Bitter Creek
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 6 walks the line around deer hunt area 100 corner by corner. It starts where Wyoming Highway 789 crosses the Wyoming-Colorado state line. On the way round it follows Wyoming Highway 789, Sweetwater County Road 19 and Interstate Highway 80, and Cow Creek and Bitter Creek. That is a legal description, not a habitat map, and it is the text a warden reads you against. The full text is in Section 7 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 100s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 100 also belongs to its elk and antelope hunt areas 100. Only the elk area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the deer area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Tipton
Its Access Yes program enrolls a Hunter Management Area here that list deer among their species — Tipton (58,470 acres). WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise.
High ground inside the line: North Flat Top, Flat Top Mountain and Powder Mountain
Named high points inside deer hunt area 100 include North Flat Top at 7,858 feet, Flat Top Mountain at 7,856 feet, Powder Mountain at 7,668 feet, The Haystacks at 7,639 feet and East Flat Top at 7,602 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Mule deer on open country use every fold and draw there is, and almost none of the flat.
Holding ground: Long Draw, Horseshoe Bend and Dripping Rock Pit Number 2
Below them sit Long Draw at 6,897 feet, Horseshoe Bend at 6,896 feet, Dripping Rock Pit Number 2 at 6,874 feet, Wild Rose Draw at 6,810 feet and Hungry Hollow at 6,808 feet. Those are the basins and bottoms of the area, and they are what you glass into from above.
Water: Hartt Cabin Spring, Moonshine Spring and Grindstone Spring
Named water inside the line includes Hartt Cabin Spring, Moonshine Spring, Grindstone Spring, Lower Willow Creek Spring, Lower Powder Spring and Patterson Springs. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.
Reading the land status
Named ground inside deer hunt area 100 runs from 6,062 feet to 7,858 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.
