Where to Find Elk in Elk Hunt Area 100

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names elk hunt area 100 "Steamboat". It runs to about 3,735 square miles, in Sweetwater (94%) and Fremont (6%) counties. WGFD reports these elk as the Steamboat herd unit, and no other hunt area shares it. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the elk live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.

The line: Sweetwater River and Red Creek

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 7 walks the line around elk hunt area 100 corner by corner. It starts at the junction of Interstate Highway 80 and Wyoming Highway 372. On the way round it follows Interstate Highway 80, Wyoming Highway 372, U.S. Highway 28 and B.L.M. Road 2317, and Sweetwater River and Red Creek. That is a legal description, not a habitat map, and it is the text a warden reads you against. The full text is in Section 9 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 100s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 100 also belongs to its deer and antelope hunt areas 100. Only the deer area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the elk area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Fremont 22

WGFD also lists one Walk-In Area covering about 1,730 acres open for elk: Fremont 22. WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise. Public Access Areas such as Green River-Blue Rim Road are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.

High ground inside the line: Steamboat Mountain, Oregon Buttes and Continental Peak

Named high points inside elk hunt area 100 include Steamboat Mountain at 8,672 feet, Oregon Buttes at 8,616 feet, Continental Peak at 8,412 feet, South Table Mountain at 8,281 feet and Essex Mountain at 8,044 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Elk want timber to bed in and open ground to feed on, within a short walk of each other.

Holding ground: Summit of the Original South Pass, Indian Gap and Blind Canyon

Below them sit Summit of the Original South Pass at 7,416 feet, Indian Gap at 7,378 feet, Blind Canyon at 7,361 feet, Split Rock Canyon at 7,322 feet and Slaughterhouse Gulch at 7,300 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.

Water: Alkali Spring, UP Spring and Marine Spring

Named water inside the line includes Alkali Spring, UP Spring, Marine Spring, Fifteenmile Spring, Minnie Spring and Ox Yoke Springs. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

Unit 100 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 6,417–7,435 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 6,849 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 3,733.1 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • BLM — 15%
  • Private / Other — 85%

Roughly 15% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 83 tanks
  • 12 springs
  • 133 stream segments
  • 20 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Steamboat Mountain (8,672 ft), Oregon Buttes (8,616 ft), Continental Peak (8,412 ft), South Table Mountain (8,281 ft)

Holding ground: Johnson Gap (7,898 ft), South Pass (7,557 ft), Freighter Gap (7,469 ft), Walk-In Area Fremont 22

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for elk in elk hunt area 100, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any elk), residents: 3,996 first-choice applicants for 138 licenses, 3.5% drawn
  • Type 1 (any elk), nonresidents: 910 first-choice applicants for 3 licenses, 0.3% drawn
  • Type 2 (any elk), residents: 304 first-choice applicants for 83 licenses, 27.3% drawn
  • Type 5 (antlerless elk), residents: 260 first-choice applicants for 63 licenses, 24.2% drawn
  • Type 4 (antlerless elk), residents: 228 first-choice applicants for 63 licenses, 27.6% drawn

Wyoming residents draw elk licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. There are 3 more type-and-residency rows for this area in 2026. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
