Where to Find Pronghorn in Antelope Hunt Area 86

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names antelope hunt area 86 "Hoback". It runs to about 566 square miles, in Sublette (61%), Teton (28%) and Lincoln (11%) counties. WGFD reports these pronghorn as the Sublette herd unit, which also takes in antelope hunt areas 85, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92 and 93 and 3 more. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the pronghorn stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.

Where antelope hunt area 86 begins and ends

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 5 defines antelope hunt area 86 as all of the drainage of the Hoback River. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 86s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 86 also belongs to its elk hunt area 86. Their lines overlap this area in places and depart from it in others. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the antelope area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Camp Creek

WGFD administers the Camp Creek Wildlife Habitat Management Area (149 acres) inside or across the line.

Wilderness inside the line: Gros Ventre Wilderness

About 17% of antelope hunt area 86 lies in the Gros Ventre Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.

High ground inside the line: Gros Ventre Range, Palmer Peak and Antoinette Peak

Named high points inside antelope hunt area 86 include Gros Ventre Range at 11,396 feet, Palmer Peak at 11,396 feet, Antoinette Peak at 11,354 feet, The Sawtooth at 11,230 feet and Corner Peak at 11,190 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Pronghorn stay on the open rolling ground and leave the timber alone.

Holding ground: Tin Can Park, Rocky Draw and Cabin Draw

Below them sit Tin Can Park at 8,168 feet, Rocky Draw at 7,942 feet, Cabin Draw at 7,825 feet, Rim Draw at 7,659 feet and Beaver Dam Draw at 7,651 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.

Water: Stinking Springs and Cliff Creek Falls

Named water inside the line includes Stinking Springs and Cliff Creek Falls. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

Reading the land status

Named ground inside antelope hunt area 86 runs from 5,889 feet to 11,396 feet — more than 4,000 feet between the named features alone, so the season you draw decides which part of it you hunt.

Pronghorn Success Rates

WGFD's 2025 harvest report carries no pronghorn row we can read back to antelope hunt area 86 on its own, so no figure is given here — a statewide average printed under this heading would look measured and would not be. WGFD's harvest reports page has the full tables.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for pronghorn in antelope hunt area 86, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any antelope), residents: 33 first-choice applicants for 8 licenses, 24.2% drawn
  • Type 1 (any antelope), nonresidents: 1 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn

Wyoming residents draw pronghorn licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
