Where to Find Pronghorn in Antelope Hunt Area 85

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names antelope hunt area 85 "Gros Ventre". It runs to about 873 square miles, in Teton (93%), Fremont (5%) and Sublette (3%) counties. WGFD reports these pronghorn as the Sublette herd unit, which also takes in antelope hunt areas 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92 and 93 and 3 more. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the pronghorn live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.

The line: Gros Ventre River, Continental Divide and Togwotee Pass

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 5 walks the line around antelope hunt area 85 corner by corner. It starts where U.S. Highway 191 crosses the Gros Ventre River at the northwest corner of the National Elk Refuge boundary. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 191, U.S. Highway 26, U.S.F.S. Road 600 and U.S.F.S. Road 620, and Gros Ventre River, Continental Divide, Togwotee Pass and Union Pass. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 85s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 85 also belongs to its elk hunt area 85. Their lines overlap this area in places and depart from it in others. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the antelope area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Teton and Woods Canyon

WGFD administers 3 Wildlife Habitat Management Areas inside or across the line, including Teton (974 acres), Woods Canyon (624 acres) and Patrol Cabin (160 acres). Its Access Yes program enrolls a Hunter Management Area here that list antelope among their species — National Elk Refuge (24,450 acres). WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise.

Wilderness inside the line: Gros Ventre Wilderness

About 31% of antelope hunt area 85 lies in the Gros Ventre Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.

High ground inside the line: Doubletop Peak, Darwin Peak and Black Peak

Named high points inside antelope hunt area 85 include Doubletop Peak at 11,663 feet, Darwin Peak at 11,634 feet, Black Peak at 11,618 feet, Triangle Peak at 11,478 feet and Sheep Mountain at 11,231 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Pronghorn stay on the open rolling ground and leave the timber alone.

Pronghorn Success Rates

WGFD's 2025 harvest report carries no pronghorn row we can read back to antelope hunt area 85 on its own, so no figure is given here — a statewide average printed under this heading would look measured and would not be. WGFD's harvest reports page has the full tables.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2022 demand report for pronghorn in antelope hunt area 85, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any antelope), residents: 141 first-choice applicants for 16 licenses, 11.3% drawn
  • Type 1 (any antelope), nonresidents: 20 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn

Wyoming residents draw pronghorn licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
