Where to Find Pronghorn in Antelope Hunt Area 50

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names antelope hunt area 50 "Elk Mountain". It runs to about 1,186 square miles, in Carbon (88%) and Albany (12%) counties. WGFD reports these pronghorn as the Elk Mountain herd unit, and no other hunt area shares it. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the pronghorn stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.

The line: North Platte River, Rock Creek and Deep Creek

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 5 walks the line around antelope hunt area 50 corner by corner. It starts where Interstate Highway 80 crosses the North Platte River. On the way round it follows Interstate Highway 80 and Wyoming Highway 230, and North Platte River, Rock Creek, Deep Creek and Laramie River. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 50s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 50 also belongs to its deer hunt area 50. None of it shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the antelope area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Pennock Mountain and Wick Brothers/Beumee

WGFD administers 2 Wildlife Habitat Management Areas inside or across the line, including Pennock Mountain (9,858 acres) and Wick Brothers/Beumee (23,408 acres). Public Access Areas such as Saratoga Lake (852 acres) and North Platte River-Pick Bridge (50 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.

Wilderness inside the line: Savage Run Wilderness and Platte River Wilderness

About 2% of antelope hunt area 50 lies in the Savage Run Wilderness and 2% of antelope hunt area 50 lies in the Platte River Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.

High ground inside the line: Medicine Bow Peak, Browns Peak and Snowy Range

Named high points inside antelope hunt area 50 include Medicine Bow Peak at 11,985 feet, Browns Peak at 11,717 feet, Snowy Range at 11,417 feet, Elk Mountain at 11,150 feet and Kennaday Peak at 10,809 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Pronghorn stay on the open rolling ground and leave the timber alone.

Holding ground: Hay Park, Grindstone Park and Sawmill Park

Below them sit Hay Park at 9,105 feet, Grindstone Park at 9,051 feet, Sawmill Park at 8,877 feet, Racehorse Park at 8,869 feet and Stanley Park at 8,844 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for pronghorn in antelope hunt area 50, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any antelope), nonresidents: 158 first-choice applicants for 10 licenses, 6.3% drawn
  • Type 0, residents: 48 first-choice applicants for 60 licenses, 100% drawn
  • Type 0, nonresidents: 17 first-choice applicants for 2 licenses, 11.8% drawn

Wyoming residents draw pronghorn licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
