Where to Find Pronghorn in Antelope Hunt Area 45

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names antelope hunt area 45 "West Laramie". It runs to about 654 square miles, in Albany (82%) and Carbon (18%) counties. WGFD reports these pronghorn as the Centennial herd unit, which also takes in antelope hunt areas 37 and 44. The boundary and the harvest figures are WGFD's. The read of the country inside them is ours, and it says so where it starts.

The line: Laramie River, North Platte River and Medicine Bow River

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 5 walks the line around antelope hunt area 45 corner by corner. It starts at the city of Laramie and Wyoming Highway 230. On the way round it follows Wyoming Highway 230 and Interstate Highway 80, and Laramie River, North Platte River, Medicine Bow River and Medicine Bow Peak. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 45s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 45 also belongs to its elk and moose hunt areas 45. Only the moose area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the antelope area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Forbes/Sheep Mountain and Strouss Hill

WGFD administers the Forbes/Sheep Mountain Wildlife Habitat Management Area (1,579 acres) inside or across the line. Its Access Yes program enrolls 2 Hunter Management Areas here that list antelope among their species — Strouss Hill (16,428 acres) and X-Bar Ranch (18,748 acres). WGFD also lists one Walk-In Area covering about 629 acres open for antelope: Albany 1. WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise.

High ground inside the line: Sugarloaf Mountain, Rock Creek Knoll and Rock Creek Ridge

Named high points inside antelope hunt area 45 include Sugarloaf Mountain at 11,402 feet, Rock Creek Knoll at 11,125 feet, Rock Creek Ridge at 10,644 feet, Rock Creek Point at 10,602 feet and Lulu Ridge at 9,885 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Pronghorn stay on the open rolling ground and leave the timber alone.

Holding ground: Centennial Valley, Croonberg Draw and Moonshine Gulch

Below them sit Centennial Valley at 7,663 feet, Croonberg Draw at 7,433 feet, Moonshine Gulch at 7,415 feet, Windmill Hollow at 7,409 feet and Chokecherry Gulch at 7,272 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.

Reading the land status

Named ground inside antelope hunt area 45 runs from 7,141 feet to 11,402 feet — more than 4,000 feet between the named features alone, so the season you draw decides which part of it you hunt.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for pronghorn in antelope hunt area 45, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any antelope), residents: 560 first-choice applicants for 467 licenses, 83.4% drawn
  • Type 1 (any antelope), nonresidents: 234 first-choice applicants for 17 licenses, 7.3% drawn

Wyoming residents draw pronghorn licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
