Deer (Buck) Hunting in Unit DG-01

Devils Garden 01 is the old Wagontire WMU, desert winter range with low densities of resident deer, centered on Wagontire Mountain and Glass Butte. ODFW says scouting is a must.

Where to Find Buck Deer in Devils Garden 01: juniper buttes near water

The Wagontire ground

This hunt area is entirely the former Wagontire WMU. It begins at Riley and runs along US 20 and US 395, then south through Christmas Valley Highway and the Millican roads and back by Fox Butte Road. Wagontire Mountain tops it at over sixty-five hundred feet, with Glass Butte and Round Top Butte close behind.

Most of the ground is public. The unit sits above forty-three hundred feet at its lowest, in Lake, Deschutes and Harney counties.

Desert deer and where they hold

ODFW describes this as primarily desert winter range with low densities of resident deer. It tells hunters to look for juniper buttes and ridges near water sources that give deer thermal cover from heat, and says scouting is a must.

Frederick's Butte and Glass Butte are its suggested starting points.

The same forecast notes that surveys in this part of the district showed a good number of mature bucks with strong horn growth, and the highest fawn ratio recorded in North Wagontire since 1962. That's encouraging, though the herd is still thin across a big area.

Gap Ranch-Wagontire Road and County Road 2-06 are two routes in. Distances are long.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's Deer Hunt Area DG-01 covers about 1,564 square miles measured on ODFW's own polygon, and ODFW rates it 83% public land. It takes in parts of these WMUs: Wagontire (about 100%). Named features inside the line fall in Lake County, Deschutes County and Harney County. Elevation runs from about 4,300 to 6,507 feet. The highest named points are Wagontire Mountain (6,507 ft), Glass Butte (6,361 ft) and Glass Buttes (6,361 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit DG-01 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 4,300–5,023 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,681 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,563.7 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • BLM — 15%
  • Private / Other — 85%

Roughly 15% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 33 tanks
  • 39 stream segments
  • 11 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Glass Butte (6,361 ft), Little Glass Butte (6,178 ft), Round Top Butte (5,746 ft), Frederick Butte (5,666 ft)

Holding ground: Paiute Lake (4,964 ft), Little Benjamin Lake (4,940 ft), Mahogany Flat (4,919 ft)

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

How to Hunt Buck Deer in Devils Garden 01: scout water, glass the buttes and take your time

Scout first, then sit

With low deer density, you won't find bucks by driving. Spend your days before the season checking water, walking juniper edges and looking for tracks, droppings and beds. Then pick a spot and plan to sit on it.

Buttes give you an elevated view. Glass the slopes in the first and last hour, and look at where juniper meets sagebrush and rock.

Pick the right buck

The forecast advises taking your time and looking at several bucks. That's good advice in a place with strong horn growth. The area offers a rifle hunt and a long archery season, and the longer bow window gives you time to be selective.

Heat is the problem. On hot days, deer lie in shade and move at night. Be in position before light and stay until dark.

Services are far apart, so carry water, a full-size spare and a way to call for help. Gate and road conditions can change.

A buck down on open desert is easier to retrieve than one in timber, but the heat can spoil meat quickly. Quarter it, bag it and get it on ice as soon as you can.

The 2025 harvest in ODFW's numbers

  • Wagontire (about 100% of this area): 108 hunters, 44 animals, 41% success over 547 hunter days.

Oregon rules that decide your day

Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Motorized retrieval

Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.

Tagging

Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.

Leaving meat

Wasting edible meat is illegal.

Where you may not shoot

  • Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.

Deer (Buck): where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

  • Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
  • Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
  • Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.

Deer (Buck) Success Rates

Unit 73: 44 of 108 hunters, 41%. Figures are ODFW's own 2025 harvest statistics, by WMU, because the new hunt areas have no history yet.
