Deer (Buck) Hunting in Unit DO-01
DeGarmo 01 covers the Warner and Beatys Butte country in Lake County, from Hwy 395 east to Hwy 140 and the Nevada line. ODFW says buck ratios are above objective, and Drake Peak and Crane Mountain define the high ground.
Where to Find Buck Deer in DeGarmo 01: the Warner Mountains and the Beatys Butte flats
Warner above, Beatys Butte below
This hunt area draws about two-thirds from the Warner WMU and the rest from Beatys Butte. The boundary starts at Hwy 395 at the California line, runs north on Hwy 395 and the Fort Bidwell-Warner Valley Road, then east on Flagstaff Lake Road to the Hart Mountain boundary and south on Shirk Ranch Road to Hwy 140.
Crane Mountain, Drake Peak, Light Peak and Twelvemile Peak are all above eight thousand feet. The lowest ground is above forty-four hundred feet, along the valley floors.
Buck ratios above objective
ODFW's Lake County forecast says buck ratios are above management objective in this area. Fawn ratios across the county averaged higher than in recent years, and hunters should expect average to slightly above average numbers of yearling bucks, with older bucks for patient hunters.
It tells hunters to focus on healthy understory and thinned areas next to cover, and in dry weather on spots within a few miles of water. The forecast says KB-01 and DG-04 had fires that improved habitat, but those are different hunt areas.
County Road 3-10, Fields Basin-Rincon Road and County Road 3-12 reach the interior. Twin Springs and Willow Creek campgrounds are public bases.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
ODFW's Deer Hunt Area DO-01 covers about 1,450 square miles measured on ODFW's own polygon, and ODFW rates it 73% public land. It takes in parts of these WMUs: Warner (about 64%) and Beatys Butte (about 36%). Named features inside the line fall in Lake County. Elevation runs from about 4,474 to 8,444 feet. The highest named points are Crane Mountain (8,444 ft), Drake Peak (8,381 ft) and Light Peak (8,322 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit DO-01 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4,475–6,665 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,621 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 1,450.1 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 17%
Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 1,266 tanks
- 10 springs
- 3,815 stream segments
- 179 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Crane Mountain (8,444 ft), Drake Peak (8,381 ft), Twelvemile Peak (8,128 ft), Crook Peak (7,799 ft)
Holding ground: Bald Hills (6,782 ft), Sage Flat (6,781 ft), Colvin Timbers (6,560 ft), Can Spring, Vee Springs
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
How to Hunt Buck Deer in DeGarmo 01: scout the benches, sit by water and be selective
Hunt different levels as the season moves
With peaks above eight thousand feet and valley floors far below, deer have room to move. Scout the benches, side canyons and meadow edges in the weeks before the opener, then be at the best one at first light.
Early archery hunters can catch deer feeding near water. Rifle hunters get a short window, and you should have two or three spots ready in case one is empty.
Be patient and read the weather
The forecast says that without significant moisture, deer become nocturnal and stay within a few miles of water, including dry seasonal creeks. Check the springs, the reservoirs and the draws that lead to them.
It also says fire danger is extreme and campfire restrictions will probably continue through early fall. Confirm closures before you leave, since it's the hunter's job to know the area is open.
Plan a long day. Glass from a vantage point, watch the edges of cover and wait for a mature buck if you've got the patience. A youth hunt also runs here, so expect other hunters in the early window.
Remote roads can be rough. Carry a spare, water and a way to call for help, and quarter and cool the meat after a kill.

The 2025 harvest in ODFW's numbers
ODFW has no harvest figures on the new hunt areas yet. Its 2025 statistics are by WMU, for all deer hunters, every season and tag type, so these are the units this area was drawn from, and each covers more or less ground than the area does.
- Warner (about 64% of this area): 144 hunters, 83 animals, 58% success over 646 hunter days.
- Beatys butte (about 36% of this area): 110 hunters, 57 animals, 52% success over 494 hunter days.

Oregon rules that decide your day
Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.
Legal shooting hours
Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.
Motorized retrieval
Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.
Tagging
Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.
Leaving meat
Wasting edible meat is illegal.
Where you may not shoot
- Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.
Deer (Buck): where to put the shot
Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.
Shots to refuse
- Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
- Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
- Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.
Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.
Deer (Buck) Success Rates
Unit 74: 83 of 144 hunters, 58%; Unit 70: 57 of 110 hunters, 52%. Figures are ODFW's own 2025 harvest statistics, by WMU, because the new hunt areas have no history yet.

Search Oregon Draw OddsODFW's eastern deer hunts carry new numbers from 2026, so the regulations list them as NEW, with no applicant history to quote. Treat any older WMU draw figures as a different hunt.
