Nevada Pronghorn

Unit 221 - 223, 241 (Steptoe, Cave, Lake, Dry Lake and Delamar Valleys)

Nevada Hunting Guide — Pronghorn

Units 221 - 223, 241 cover about 3,900 square miles of Lincoln and White Pine counties, from Steptoe Valley to Delamar Valley. Antelope hold year-round in the lower valleys rather than the high country, mostly on BLM land reached from US Highway 93 and State Route 318. Summer monsoon rains, or the lack of them, decide how tightly they cling to water.

Where to Find Pronghorn in Units 221 - 223, 241: Steptoe, Cave, Lake, Dry Lake and Delamar Valleys

Steptoe, Cave and Lake Valleys in Units 221, 222

Antelope are spread through the lower elevations and valley bottoms of this group wherever the forage is good. Low sagebrush or similar shrub cover mixed with grasses and forbs holds the most animals. Steptoe Valley and Cave Valley in Units 221 and 222, and Lake Valley in Unit 222, hold antelope all year.

Dry Lake Valley and Delamar Valley

Farther south, Dry Lake Valley in Unit 223 and Delamar Valley in Unit 241 are also used year-round. In August and September, shrub steppe with enough forbs and grasses is usually the best place to find them. NDOW says antelope are rarely in the high country or in heavy tree cover anywhere in this group, so stay low.

Monsoon green-up and permanent water

Most of the group's moisture falls in late fall and winter as rain and snow. Late spring and early summer are dry. From late July, monsoon storms can bring heavy rain that may last into mid-August, greening up the vegetation and shifting where animals feed. In a year without the monsoon, when it stays hot and dry, antelope lean on permanent water such as springs and wildlife guzzlers. That's when reliable water does most of the work of finding them for you.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A pronghorn tag for this group is good in units 221, 222, 223 and 241, about 3,891 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Lincoln County and White Pine County. The named ranges inside the line are Bristol Range, Delamar Mountains, Black Canyon Range, Fairview Range, Egan Range and Ely Springs Range. The highest named points are Mount Grafton (10,985 ft), Ward Mountain (10,921 ft) and Hamels Peak (10,346 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 2,913 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 327 springs inside it, Cabin Spring, North Creek Spring, Pahroc Spring and Tex Spring among them.
