Nevada Hunting Guide — Bighorn Sheep

Unit 241 covers about 1,062 square miles of Lincoln County: the South Hiko and South Pahroc ranges and the Delamar Mountains, with two wilderness areas inside. Bighorn Sheep Hunting in Unit 241

Unit 241 covers about 1,062 square miles of Lincoln County: the South Hiko and South Pahroc ranges and the Delamar Mountains, with two wilderness areas inside. NDOW's sheet describes steep, rugged desert bighorn country where most hunters stay near the roads, though the biologist says many good rams live in the Delamar Mountains Wilderness.

Where to Find Desert Bighorn in Unit 241: the South Hiko, the South Pahroc and the western Delamars

Six-mile and Eight-Mile springs to Bomber Canyon

NDOW places this unit's sheep in three blocks: the South Hiko, the South Pahroc and the western half of the Delamar Mountains. In the South Hiko and South Pahroc the sheet singles out the Six-mile and Eight-Mile springs. In the Delamars it points to the western and southern parts of the range, reached from US 93 and up Bomber Canyon, which leads to the Delamar #2 guzzler.

Water early, scattered later

Sheep here keep to steep, rocky country with enough escape terrain to get away from predators. When it's hot and dry they stay near reliable water, whether that's a natural spring, a cattle trough or a guzzler. As fall rain comes in they have more places to drink and spread out across the range. By the hunting season, the biologist adds, cool weather and early winter storms may have cut them loose from water altogether, so don't build the whole hunt around one trough.

That puts the weight on glassing. NDOW expects tagholders to spend long hours behind binoculars and a spotting scope. GNIS also names the Burnt Springs Range and summits such as Chokecherry Mountain and Slidy Mountain inside the unit, though the sheet doesn't mention them.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in unit 241, about 1,062 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Lincoln County. The named ranges inside the line are Delamar Mountains, South Pahroc Range and Burnt Springs Range. The highest named points are Chokecherry Mountain (8,037 ft), Slidy Mountain (7,843 ft) and Lookout Mountain (7,095 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 2,913 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 90 springs inside it, Wire Grass Spring, New Indian Spring, Sixmile Spring and Mona Spring among them.

Unit 241 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 2,719–6,514 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,894 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,062 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Water on the ground

  • 15 tanks
  • 17 springs
  • 24 stream segments
  • 5 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
