Nevada Bighorn Sheep

Unit 221, 223 (Hiko Range, North Pahroc Range and the Egan Range)

Nevada Hunting Guide — Bighorn Sheep

Units 221, 223 cover about 1,892 square miles of Lincoln and White Pine counties, but NDOW's desert bighorn sheet puts most of the sheep in Unit 223's Hiko Range. A few rams may live in the North Pahroc Range, and a small remnant survives on the west side of the Egan Range after a major disease die-off. Much of the Hiko Range can be glassed from roads.

Where to Find Desert Bighorn Sheep in Units 221, 223: Hiko Canyon, Crystal Wash and Hope Guzzler

The Hiko Range in Unit 223

Most of this group's bighorn live in Unit 223, in the Hiko Range, in steep, rugged terrain at the higher elevations. NDOW names three areas to consider: Hiko Canyon; Crystal Wash, at the very south end of Unit 223 north of U.S. Highway 93; and the country around Hiko Narrows and Hope Guzzler at the north end of the range.

Water use depends on the weather. After a dry stretch, sheep will be near reliable water. After a wet one, they may not be grouped near permanent water at all, because the rocky terrain can hold pools of rainwater for several weeks after storms pass. Later in the year, cooler temperatures and fall rain also make guzzlers less of a draw.

The North Pahroc Range and the Egan Range

A few rams may be in the North Pahroc Range. Bighorn may also be found on the west side of the Egan Range in Unit 221, but that herd suffered a major disease event several years ago with high adult mortality. NDOW says a few bighorn persist there, based on a recent credible report, and that a hunter may still find a harvestable ram. Treat it as a long shot rather than a plan.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in units 221 and 223, about 1,892 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Lincoln County and White Pine County. The named ranges inside the line are Bristol Range, Black Canyon Range, Egan Range, Ely Springs Range, North Pahroc Range and Hiko Range. The highest named points are Ward Mountain (10,921 ft), Hamels Peak (10,346 ft) and Shingle Peak (9,809 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 3,924 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 129 springs inside it, Pahroc Spring, Tex Spring, Rock Spring and Trough Spring among them.
