Where to Find California Bighorn Sheep in Units 011, 013: Hays Peak, Slide Spring and Massacre Rim

Unit 013: Hays Peak north to Slide Spring

In Unit 013, successful hunters focus from Hays Peak north to Slide Spring. The Hays Range has dense juniper woodland, and rams use it, so plan on long glassing sessions to pick them out of the trees.

Unit 011: Massacre Rim and Coleman Canyon Rim

In Unit 011, successful hunters spend their time glassing the large boulder fields along Massacre Rim near Big Point. Rams also live along the Coleman Canyon Rim, though they may move back and forth between Oregon and Nevada there, so check which side of the state line a ram is on before you plan a stalk.

Water early, the rut later

The sheet lays out a two-part season. Early on, both ram and ewe groups are tied to water, and many hunters do well glassing around water sources, water developments included. NDOW notes that internet mapping services can help you find big game guzzler locations. Later, the rut begins in late October and runs through mid-November, and rams start seeking out ewes, which changes where you'll find them.

NDOW drew no tag for this group in 2025. If a hunt is offered again, those two phases and the rims and ranges above are where the sheet would have you start.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in units 011 and 013, about 1,276 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Washoe County. The named ranges inside the line are Lost Creek Hills, Painted Point Range, Home Camp Range, Hays Canyon Range, Pinto Peak Range and Mosquito Mountains. The highest named points are Hays Canyon Peak (7,907 ft), Fortynine Mountain (7,553 ft) and Divine Peak (7,448 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,579 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 110 springs inside it, Tom Spring, Post Spring, Murphy Spring and Cottonwood Spring among them.
