Unit 011 (Vya Rim, Massacre Bench and the Painted Point Range)
Nevada Hunting Guide — Pronghorn
Unit 011 covers about 664 square miles of Washoe County around the Vya Rim and the Painted Point Range. NDOW's sheet sends August pronghorn hunters to the high plateaus and tables, especially near springs. It also warns that the rocky, narrow road network is the main obstacle here, since less than 5 percent of the unit is private. There are no developed campgrounds.

Where to Find Pronghorn in Unit 011: the Vya Rim lakes, Massacre Bench and Buck Pasture
Holy and Crook Lakes on the Vya Rim
In August, water and feed decide where pronghorn can live. That pushes them up onto the summer range, the high plateaus and tables that hold what they need. Springs are the places to concentrate, because they offer both a drink and green forage. NDOW names four areas to focus on:
- Holy Lake and Crook Lake on top of the Vya Rim
- The Massacre Bench country east of Vya
- Buck Pasture
- The ground between Massacre Lake and Fatty Martin Lake
Juniper shade on the Massacre Lake side
As long as water holds out, expect the herd to stay concentrated on those upper summer ranges. Parts of the unit carry thick juniper. In the hottest weeks pronghorn use it for shade and cover, so glass the tree edges as well as the open tables.
Every 2025 hunt here fell in August or the first week of September, so heat and water are part of the picture whichever weapon you carry. Learn where the springs are on a map before you arrive, then check which ones are still running.
The ground NDOW draws for this tag
A pronghorn tag for this group is good in unit 011, about 664 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Washoe County. The named ranges inside the line are Painted Point Range and Mosquito Mountains. The highest named points are Metzker Peak (7,194 ft), Table Butte (6,544 ft) and Big Point (6,514 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,763 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 29 springs inside it, Post Spring, Twin Springs, Antelope Spring and Biebe Spring among them.
