The line: Fontenelle Dam, Green River and New Fork River
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 6 walks the line around deer hunt area 138 corner by corner. It starts at the Fontenelle Dam on the Green River. On the way round it follows Lincoln County Road 313, Sublette County Road 139, Wyoming Highway 351 and Sweetwater County Road 28, and Fontenelle Dam, Green River, New Fork River and Boulder Creek. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 7 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Ground WGFD opens: Chimey Butte
Its Access Yes program enrolls a Hunter Management Area here that list deer among their species — Chimey Butte (1,569 acres). WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise. Public Access Areas such as New Fork River-Remmick (9 acres) and East Fork River-Richie's Vible are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.
Wilderness inside the line: Bridger Wilderness
About 10% of deer hunt area 138 lies in the Bridger Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.
High ground inside the line: Raid Peak, Nylon Peak and Mount Geikie
Named high points inside deer hunt area 138 include Raid Peak at 12,509 feet, Nylon Peak at 12,347 feet, Mount Geikie at 12,344 feet, Pylon Peak at 12,326 feet and Bair Peak at 12,290 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. White-tailed deer hold to cover — river bottoms, brushy draws and timber edges — and rarely stray far from it.
Holding ground: Willow Basin, Silver Creek Canyon and Hall Basin
Below them sit Willow Basin at 8,454 feet, Silver Creek Canyon at 8,133 feet, Hall Basin at 7,990 feet, Moonshine Park at 7,783 feet and Elk Meadow Pit at 7,190 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.
Water: North Sublette Meadow Spring, Sublette Well Number 5 and Oasis Well
Named water inside the line includes North Sublette Meadow Spring, Sublette Well Number 5, Oasis Well, Sublette Well Number 4, Monument Butte Well and Little Colorado Well Number 6. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.
