Where to Find Mule Deer in Deer Hunt Area 130

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names deer hunt area 130 "Big Sandy". It runs to about 688 square miles, in Sublette (77%), Sweetwater (13%) and Fremont (8%) counties. WGFD reports these mule deer as the Sublette herd unit, which also takes in deer hunt areas 131, 138, 139, 140, 141, 142, 150 and 151 and 4 more. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the mule deer live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.

The line: Big Sandy Reservoir, Big Sandy River and Continental Divide

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 6 walks the line around deer hunt area 130 corner by corner. It starts at the town of Farson and U.S. Highway 191. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 191, Sweetwater County Road 28 and Wyoming Highway 28, and Big Sandy Reservoir, Big Sandy River, Continental Divide and Sweetwater River. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 7 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 130s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 130 also belongs to its elk hunt area 130. None of it shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the deer area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Wilderness inside the line: Bridger Wilderness

About 9% of deer hunt area 130 lies in the Bridger Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.

High ground inside the line: Temple Peak, East Temple Peak and Dog Tooth Peak

Named high points inside deer hunt area 130 include Temple Peak at 12,893 feet, East Temple Peak at 12,583 feet, Dog Tooth Peak at 12,467 feet, Big Sandy Mountain at 12,382 feet and Mount Nystrom at 12,274 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Mule deer bed on broken ground with a view and feed on the brush below it.

Holding ground: Long Draw, Alkali Draw and Long Draw

Below them sit Long Draw at 7,072 feet, Alkali Draw at 7,070 feet, Long Draw at 7,007 feet, Eden Valley at 6,709 feet and Bear Trap at 8,373 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.

Water: Halls Meadow Spring, Spicer Well Number 2 and Monument Spring

Named water inside the line includes Halls Meadow Spring, Spicer Well Number 2, Monument Spring and Chicken Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for mule deer in deer hunt area 130, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1, residents: 490 first-choice applicants for 4 licenses, 0.8% drawn
  • Type 1, nonresidents: 49 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn

Wyoming residents draw mule deer licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
