Where to Find Mule Deer in Deer Hunt Area 102
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names deer hunt area 102 "Aspen Mountain". It runs to about 1,211 square miles, entirely in Sweetwater County. WGFD reports these mule deer as the South Rock Springs herd unit, which also takes in deer hunt area 101. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the mule deer stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.
The line: Green River, Rock Springs and Flaming Gorge Reservoir
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 6 walks the line around deer hunt area 102 corner by corner. It starts where Interstate Highway 80 crosses the Green River. On the way round it follows Interstate Highway 80 and Wyoming Highway 430, and Green River, Rock Springs and Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 7 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 102s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 102 also belongs to its elk and antelope hunt areas 102. Only the elk area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the deer area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
High ground inside the line: Pine Mountain, Little Mountain and Tepee Mountains
Named high points inside deer hunt area 102 include Pine Mountain at 9,549 feet, Little Mountain at 9,064 feet, Tepee Mountains at 8,785 feet, Richards Mountain at 8,680 feet and Quaking Asp Mountain at 8,668 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Mule deer bed on broken ground with a view and feed on the brush below it.
Holding ground: Dipping Spring Canyon, Diamond Field and Janes Meadow
Below them sit Dipping Spring Canyon at 7,586 feet, Diamond Field at 7,560 feet, Janes Meadow at 7,544 feet, South Spring Draw at 7,359 feet and Circle at 7,344 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.
Water: Alkali Springs, Gap Spring and Iron Spring
Named water inside the line includes Alkali Springs, Gap Spring, Iron Spring, Beans Spring, Maggie Springs and Laney Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.
Reading the land status
Named ground inside deer hunt area 102 runs from 6,047 feet to 9,549 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.

Mule Deer Draw Odds
| Season | Tags | Applicants | Draw % | Pts (n/p) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rifle — General Type 1 either sex (resident) | 102 | 3,606 | 2.8% | — |
| Rifle — General Type 1 either sex (nonresident) | 2 | 550 | 0.4% | — |
Data from 2026 draw results. Each row is one residency pool — read the label before the number. This agency publishes no point thresholds, so the Pts column stays blank and these are pool odds, not what a point total draws.
Open in Draw Odds EngineWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for mule deer in deer hunt area 102, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1 (any deer), residents: 3,606 first-choice applicants for 102 licenses, 2.8% drawn
- Type 1 (any deer), nonresidents: 550 first-choice applicants for 2 licenses, 0.4% drawn
Wyoming residents draw mule deer licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
