Where to Find Pronghorn in Antelope Hunt Area 80

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names antelope hunt area 80 "Badger Basin". It runs to about 1,384 square miles, in Park (84%) and Big Horn (16%) counties. WGFD reports these pronghorn as the Badger Basin herd unit, and no other hunt area shares it. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the pronghorn live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.

The line: Bighorn River, Shoshone River and North Fork

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 5 walks the line around antelope hunt area 80 corner by corner. It starts where the Bighorn River crosses the Wyoming-Montana state line. On the way round it follows Wyoming Highway 296 and U.S. Highway 212, and Bighorn River, Shoshone River and North Fork. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 80s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 80 also belongs to its elk and deer hunt areas 80. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the antelope area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Yellowtail and Yellowtail

WGFD administers the Yellowtail Wildlife Habitat Management Area (19,203 acres) inside or across the line. Its Access Yes program enrolls a Hunter Management Area here that list antelope among their species — Yellowtail (19,487 acres). WGFD also lists 2 Walk-In Areas covering about 7,877 acres open for antelope, among them Park 4 and Big Horn 2. WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise.

High ground inside the line: Tibbs Butte, Tolman Mountain and Sawtooth Mountain

Named high points inside antelope hunt area 80 include Tibbs Butte at 10,653 feet, Tolman Mountain at 10,423 feet, Sawtooth Mountain at 10,176 feet, Bird Mountain at 9,932 feet and Upper Dillworth Bench at 9,027 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Pronghorn stay on the open rolling ground and leave the timber alone.

Holding ground: The Box, Oxyoke Canyon and Rattlesnake Canyon

Below them sit The Box at 5,824 feet, Oxyoke Canyon at 5,658 feet, Rattlesnake Canyon at 5,420 feet, Two Dot Flats at 5,131 feet and Eaglenest Basin at 5,029 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.

Water: Sykes Spring, De Maris Springs and Blue Springs

Named water inside the line includes Sykes Spring, De Maris Springs, Blue Springs, Bridal Veil Falls, Needle Hot Springs and Britton Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for pronghorn in antelope hunt area 80, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any antelope), residents: 401 first-choice applicants for 56 licenses, 14% drawn
  • Type 1 (any antelope), nonresidents: 102 first-choice applicants for 2 licenses, 2% drawn
  • Type 2 (any antelope), residents: 37 first-choice applicants for 20 licenses, 54.1% drawn
  • Type 2 (any antelope), nonresidents: 10 first-choice applicants for 1 license, 10% drawn

Wyoming residents draw pronghorn licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
