Where to Find Pronghorn in Antelope Hunt Area 78

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names antelope hunt area 78 "McCullough Peaks". It runs to about 939 square miles, in Big Horn (68%) and Park (32%) counties. WGFD reports these pronghorn as the Carter Mountain herd unit, which also takes in antelope hunt areas 81 and 82. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the pronghorn stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.

The line: Shoshone River, Bighorn River and Greybull River

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 5 walks the line around antelope hunt area 78 corner by corner. It starts at the junction of U.S. Highway 120 and U.S. Highway 14-16-20 in the town of Cody. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 120, U.S. Highway 14-16-20, Big Horn County Road 8 and Wyoming Highway 30, and Shoshone River, Bighorn River and Greybull River. That is a legal description, not a habitat map, and it is the text a warden reads you against. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 78s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 78 also belongs to its elk and deer hunt areas 78. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the antelope area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Yellowtail and Yellowtail

WGFD administers the Yellowtail Wildlife Habitat Management Area (19,203 acres) inside or across the line. Its Access Yes program enrolls a Hunter Management Area here that list antelope among their species — Yellowtail (19,487 acres). WGFD also lists 13 Walk-In Areas covering about 8,911 acres open for antelope, among them Park 1, Park 3 and Big Horn 2. WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise.

High ground inside the line: McCullough Peaks, Little Sheep Mountain and Sheep Mountain

Named high points inside antelope hunt area 78 include McCullough Peaks at 6,523 feet, Little Sheep Mountain at 5,157 feet, Sheep Mountain at 5,069 feet, Gilmore Hill at 5,025 feet and Red Point at 4,979 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Pronghorn live in the open and trust their eyes, which is the whole problem.

Holding ground: Willwood Draw, Emblem Draw and Roan Wash

Below them sit Willwood Draw at 4,249 feet, Emblem Draw at 4,218 feet, Roan Wash at 4,120 feet, East Fork Sand Draw at 4,118 feet and South Fork Kellerman Gulch at 4,101 feet. Those are the basins and bottoms of the area, and they are what you glass into from above.

Water: Black Spring and Stone Barn Spring

Named water inside the line includes Black Spring and Stone Barn Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for pronghorn in antelope hunt area 78, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any antelope), residents: 763 first-choice applicants for 70 licenses, 9.2% drawn
  • Type 1 (any antelope), nonresidents: 119 first-choice applicants for 2 licenses, 1.7% drawn

Wyoming residents draw pronghorn licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
