Where to Find Pronghorn in Antelope Hunt Area 47
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names antelope hunt area 47 "Shirley Basin". It runs to about 1,103 square miles, in Carbon (77%) and Albany (21%) counties. WGFD reports these pronghorn as the Medicine Bow herd unit, which also takes in antelope hunt areas 30, 31, 32, 42, 46 and 48. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the pronghorn live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.
The line: Troublesome Creek, Troublesome Spring and Shirley Mountain
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 5 walks the line around antelope hunt area 47 corner by corner. It starts at U.S. Highway 30 in the town of Medicine Bow. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 30, Wyoming Highway 72, Carbon County Road 291 and B.L.M. Road 3115, and Troublesome Creek, Troublesome Spring, Shirley Mountain and Leo-Shirley Basin. That is a legal description, not a habitat map, and it is the text a warden reads you against. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 47s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 47 also belongs to its elk and deer hunt areas 47. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the antelope area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Missouri John and Como Bluffs
Its Access Yes program enrolls 3 Hunter Management Areas here that list antelope among their species — Missouri John (13,363 acres), Como Bluffs (72,976 acres) and Pine Draw (11,579 acres). WGFD also lists 3 Walk-In Areas covering about 6,274 acres open for antelope, among them Carbon 13, Carbon 15 and Safety Zone. WGFD's 2026 regulations open Access Yes land only for the species and dates listed for each area, with each area's own rules on WGFD's site and no motorized travel unless WGFD says otherwise. Public Access Areas such as Walker Jenkins Lake are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.
High ground inside the line: Bald Mountain, Shirley Mountains and Windy Hill
Named high points inside antelope hunt area 47 include Bald Mountain at 9,079 feet, Shirley Mountains at 9,061 feet, Windy Hill at 8,334 feet, Pine Hill at 8,075 feet and Freezeout Mountains at 8,063 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Pronghorn stay on the open rolling ground and leave the timber alone.
Holding ground: Onemile Draw, Shirley Basin and Brennan Draw
Below them sit Onemile Draw at 7,217 feet, Shirley Basin at 7,167 feet, Brennan Draw at 7,155 feet, Shirley Basin at 7,090 feet and Chalk Draw at 6,983 feet. Those are the basins and bottoms of the area, and they are what you glass into from above.
Reading the land status
Named ground inside antelope hunt area 47 runs from 6,432 feet to 9,079 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.

Data from 2026 draw results. Each row is one residency pool — read the label before the number. This agency publishes no point thresholds, so the Pts column stays blank and these are pool odds, not what a point total draws.
Open in Draw Odds EngineWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for pronghorn in antelope hunt area 47, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1 (any antelope), residents: 1,370 first-choice applicants for 471 licenses, 34.4% drawn
- Type 1 (any antelope), nonresidents: 627 first-choice applicants for 16 licenses, 2.6% drawn
- Type 2 (any antelope), residents: 607 first-choice applicants for 400 licenses, 65.9% drawn
- Type 2 (any antelope), nonresidents: 205 first-choice applicants for 15 licenses, 7.3% drawn
Wyoming residents draw pronghorn licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
