Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Unit 22

UDWR draws an exact line around unit 22 and says nothing about where the bighorn sheep stand inside it. So the ground below is the unit's own and the read on where to start is ours, labelled as such. The unit lies in Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Millard and Piute counties. It runs to about 1,786 square miles.

What bounds unit 22

UDWR has unit 22 Boundary begins at SR-130 and I-15; north on SR-130 to SR-21; north on SR-21 to SR-257; north on SR-257 to Black Rock Road; east on this road to I-15; south on I-15 to I-70; east on I-70 to US-89; south on US-89 to SR-20; west on SR-20 to I-15; south on I-15 to SR-130. Excludes all CWMUs. That is a legal description, not a habitat map. Those features are what you will check against the map all week, and the divides among them are the ones that matter.

High ground inside the line: Delano Peak, Mount Belknap and Mount Baldy

Named high points inside the unit include Delano Peak at 12,145 feet, Mount Belknap at 12,125 feet, Mount Baldy at 12,041 feet, Mount Hawley at 11,975 feet and Mount Brigham at 11,749 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Sheep need rock to escape into and will not stand far from it.

Holding ground: Big Meadow, Peterson Flat and LeBaron Meadows

Below them sit Big Meadow at 9,951 feet, Peterson Flat at 9,945 feet, LeBaron Meadows at 9,930 feet, Kays Meadow at 9,925 feet and Staley Pasture at 9,892 feet. Those are the basins, parks and bottoms this unit has, and they are what you glass into from above. Two you can watch from a single knob is worth more than five you have to drive between.

Water: Dock Spring, Big Swamp Springs and Baker Spring

The water inside the unit line comes to 297 mapped stream reaches, 22 lakes, 112 stock tanks and 22 springs. Named sources include Dock Spring, Big Swamp Springs, Baker Spring, Redcedar Spring, Rock Corral Spring and Granite Spring. On ground with that many tanks, knowing which two or three hold water in your season is the most useful thing a scouting trip can tell you.

Before you apply: who owns this unit

A UDWR permit does not authorise hunting on Native American trust lands, on a CWMU without that CWMU's own permit, or on National Park land, and written permission is required to hunt private land. Our ownership read for this unit is approximate — it comes out as National Forest 60%, Private / Other 32% and State Trust 8%, so treat it as a starting point and check a current land-status layer before you plan a route. The unit runs from 5,016 feet to 10,046 feet, averaging 6,921 — that is a lot of vertical to cover, and it means the season you draw decides which half of the unit you hunt.

Unit 22 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 5,016–10,046 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 6,921 ft ; peaks can run higher. That spread means you can hunt two seasons in one day — plan clothing for both ends.
  • 1,785.7 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 32%

Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 112 tanks
  • 22 springs
  • 297 stream segments
  • 22 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Delano Peak (12,145 ft), Mount Belknap (12,125 ft), Mount Baldy (12,041 ft), Mount Brigham (11,749 ft)

Holding ground: Bullion Pasture (10,872 ft), Little Meadow (10,248 ft), Big Flat (10,192 ft), Dock Spring, Big Swamp Springs

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

Bighorn Sheep Success Rates

UDWR's 2023 harvest estimates carry no bighorn sheep row for unit 22 that we can read back to this unit on its own. Where the agency reports a unit inside a grouping, or prints a table our parser cannot resolve to a single column, we leave the number out rather than publish a statewide average as though it had been measured here. UDWR's current harvest estimates are the place to check before you apply.

UDWR's draw recap has no bighorn sheep record we can tie to unit 22. That usually means the licence is sold over the counter, is issued under a hunt code covering several units, or was not offered in the years we hold. Rather than estimate a point requirement, we leave it blank — check UDWR's own draw recap for the hunt code you mean to apply for.
