Where to Find Elk in Unit 16A
What UDWR publishes for unit 16A is a boundary, not a elk map. Every place named below sits inside the unit line. Which of them holds animals in your season is for you to find out. The unit lies in Juab, Millard, Sanpete, Sevier and Utah counties. It runs to about 1,471 square miles.
What bounds unit 16A
UDWR has unit 16A Boundary begins at US-6 and I-15 at Spanish Fork; southeast on US-6 to US-89 near Thistle; south on US-89 to US-50 at Salina; northwest on US-50 to I-15 at Scipio; north on I-15 to US-6 at Spanish Fork. Excludes all CWMUs. Read it as a frame, not as a hint about animals. What it does give you is the way in: the rivers and highways you cross, and the divides that decide which drainage you end up in.
High ground inside the line: Mount Nebo, Wasatch Range and North Peak
Named high points inside the unit include Mount Nebo at 11,804 feet, Wasatch Range at 11,722 feet, North Peak at 11,075 feet, Bald Mountain at 10,815 feet and Loafer Ridge at 10,650 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Elk on low, open country live on distance and visibility, so they see you first.
Holding ground: Middle Basin, North Flat and Broad Canyon
Below them sit Middle Basin at 9,092 feet, North Flat at 8,576 feet, Broad Canyon at 8,369 feet, Left Fork Log Hollow at 8,275 feet and South Flat at 8,272 feet. Those are the basins, parks and bottoms this unit has, and they are what you glass into from above. Reaching the edge of one before light beats reaching its middle at noon.
Water: Rock Spring, Dipping Corral Spring and Minnie Simmons Spring
Named sources include Rock Spring, Dipping Corral Spring, Minnie Simmons Spring, Tidwell Spring, Bradley Springs and Molten Spring. Nothing in the data says which of them run in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.
Before you apply: who owns this unit
A UDWR permit does not authorise hunting on Native American trust lands, on a CWMU without that CWMU's own permit, or on National Park land, and written permission is required to hunt private land. Our ownership read for this unit is approximate — it comes out as Private / Other 100%, so treat it as a starting point and check a current land-status layer before you plan a route. The unit runs from 5,042 feet to 8,184 feet, averaging 6,264 — enough relief to separate summer range from winter range.
