Deer (Buck) Hunting in Unit KB-02

Klamath Basin 02 covers the Klamath Falls and Sprague units, from Swan Lake Point at 7260 ft down to the Klamath Basin edge. ODFW rates buck ratios above objective, but fire closures from the Wright Springs Fire remain.

Where to Find Bucks in the Klamath Basin 02 Hunt Area: Swan Lake, Yainax Butte and the closure edges

Klamath Falls and Sprague ground

The area draws mostly from the Klamath Falls unit, with the rest from Sprague. ODFW's boundary leaves Klamath Falls on US 97 and Highway 62, follows the eastern edge of Crater Lake National Park, then crosses through forest roads including NF 43, NF 46 and NF 44 to the Sycan and Sprague rivers. It returns by Highway 140, Bly, Gerber Road, Lost River and the state line. Swan Lake Point, Yainax Butte, Swan Lake Mountain, Fuego Mountain and Saddle Mountain are the named points.

The Wright Springs closure

ODFW's forecast says KB-02 is above buck ratio objective and hunter success should be above average. It also warns that the areas around the Wright Springs Fire remain closed. That's a hard line: you can't scout or hunt inside it, and it removes part of the area from your plan. Check the Forest Service closure map before you drive in. Bonanza, Altamont, Chiloquin and Klamath Falls are the closest towns. The named roads are US 97, CR 600, Harpold Road, CR 676 and forest road NF 44. Less than half the ground is public, so a landowner map helps as much as a closure map does.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's Deer Hunt Area KB-02 covers about 1,816 square miles measured on ODFW's own polygon, and ODFW rates it 45% public land. It takes in parts of these WMUs: Klamath Falls (about 69%) and Sprague (about 31%). Named features inside the line fall in Klamath County. Elevation runs from about 4,064 to 7,260 feet. The highest named points are Swan Lake Point (7,260 ft), Yainax Butte (7,219 ft) and Swan Lake Mountain (7,024 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit KB-02 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 4,088–5,629 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,630 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,816.3 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 32%

Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 785 tanks
  • 3 springs
  • 3,848 stream segments
  • 158 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Swan Lake Point (7,260 ft), Yainax Butte (7,219 ft), Swan Lake Mountain (7,024 ft), Fuego Mountain (6,887 ft)

Holding ground: Ya Whee Plateau (5,902 ft), Sun Pass (5,430 ft), Dry Lakes Flat (5,389 ft), Grouse Spring, Fawn Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

How to Hunt Bucks in the Klamath Basin 02 Hunt Area: scout around the closure and find water

Plan around the map

Print or download the current closure boundary and mark it on your hunting map. Hunt the open ground beside it, since deer that were pushed by the fire may be sitting at the edge. ODFW also says deer are more nocturnal in dry weather and stay within a few miles of water, using even dried seasonal creeks. Check them.

Roads and rigs

US 97, CR 600, Forest Road 44 and Harpold Road are the named routes. Bonanza, Altamont, Chiloquin and Klamath Falls are close, so day-trips from town are practical. Camp options include the Klamath Falls KOA Journey, Bristol Mobile Park and Switchback Hill Trailhead. Fire restrictions on campfires will likely last through the early fall seasons, so bring a stove. The bow, rifle and youth hunts all take a buck with visible antler. Work first and last light, and after a shot on steep country, quarter the deer and carry it out.

The 2025 harvest in ODFW's numbers

ODFW has no harvest figures on the new hunt areas yet. Its 2025 statistics are by WMU, for all deer hunters, every season and tag type, so these are the units this area was drawn from, and each covers more or less ground than the area does.

  • Klamath falls (about 69% of this area): 625 hunters, 278 animals, 44% success over 2,857 hunter days.
  • Sprague (about 31% of this area): 388 hunters, 144 animals, 37% success over 2,207 hunter days.

Oregon rules that decide your day

Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Motorized retrieval

Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.

Tagging

Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.

Leaving meat

Wasting edible meat is illegal.

Where you may not shoot

  • Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.

Deer (Buck): where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

  • Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
  • Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
  • Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.

Deer (Buck) Success Rates

Unit 32: 278 of 625 hunters, 44%; Unit 33: 144 of 388 hunters, 37%. Figures are ODFW's own 2025 harvest statistics, by WMU, because the new hunt areas have no history yet.

ODFW's eastern deer hunts carry new numbers from 2026, so the regulations list them as NEW, with no applicant history to quote. Treat any older WMU draw figures as a different hunt.
