Where to Find Pronghorn in the Klamath Falls Unit: the Gerber Reservoir country and east to Bly

The Gerber hunt area and its boundary

ODFW describes the Gerber Reservoir hunts as parts of Units 75, 33 and 32, starting at Merrill and running along Stateline Road, the Klamath-Lake county line and the Sycan River. The unit itself runs north on US 97 to the Williamson River, east on the Sprague River to Godowa Springs Road, then to Beatty and Bly on Highway 140. It swings southwest on Gerber Road, down East Langell Valley Road to the Lost River, and out to the California line. Bonanza, Altamont, Merrill and Klamath Falls are your towns.

Roads, buttes and private ground

Harpold Road, West Langell Valley Road and National Forest Development Road 384 cut across the unit. Swan Lake Point, Yainax Butte, Swan Lake Mountain, Saddle Mountain and Edgewood Mountain rise above it, with named elevations running from 4,064 feet to 7,260. Public land is a minority, so much of what you hunt will belong to ranchers. ODFW's forecast has no pronghorn read for this ground, so spend your scouting days finding where animals are on the ground, not guessing from the map. Fence lines, county roads and ranch gates shape every stalk. Learn them before the hunt.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

The Klamath Falls Unit, WMU 32, covers about 1,249 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 35% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Klamath County. Elevation runs from about 4,064 to 7,260 feet. The highest named points are Swan Lake Point (7,260 ft), Yainax Butte (7,219 ft) and Swan Lake Mountain (7,024 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit 32 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 4,088–5,817 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,720 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,249.2 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 32%

Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 765 tanks
  • 1 springs
  • 3,821 stream segments
  • 154 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Swan Lake Point (7,260 ft), Yainax Butte (7,219 ft), Swan Lake Mountain (7,024 ft), Saddle Mountain (6,839 ft)

Holding ground: Ya Whee Plateau (5,902 ft), Dry Lakes Flat (5,389 ft), Yellow Jacket Flat (5,307 ft), Grouse Spring, Fawn Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
