Deer (Buck) Hunting in Unit DG-04

Devils Garden 04 draws mostly from the Silver Lake WMU, with a smaller part of Sprague, around Yamsay Mountain, Thompson Reservoir and the Sycan River. ODFW says fires from 2018 to 2021 improved the habitat.

Where to Find Buck Deer in Devils Garden 04: Yamsay burn country and the Sycan River side

Silver Lake and a piece of Sprague

About five-sixths of this area is the Silver Lake WMU, with the rest from Sprague. The boundary leaves Silver Lake on Hwy 31, runs to NF 28 and NF 30, then follows the Sycan River from Pikes Crossing, west on NF 44 and NF 46, and back east on Silver Lake Road.

Yamsay Mountain, at over eight thousand feet, anchors it. Hager Mountain, Fremont Point, Dead Indian Mountain and Foster Butte round out the named peaks.

Fire has helped

The Lake County forecast says significant wildfires in this hunt area between 2018 and 2021 created improved habitat, and that mule deer there are responding favorably. It adds that buck ratios are above management objective.

It tells hunters to concentrate on healthy understory or thinned areas with good forage next to cover. Fawn ratios across the county were higher than in recent years, which reflects better feed in the post-fire forests.

CR 600, NF 44, NF 28 and NF 2901 are the main roads. Silver Creek Marsh, Thompson Reservoir and the Buck Creek forest camps give you bases. Chiloquin and Paisley are the closest towns.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's Deer Hunt Area DG-04 covers about 1,142 square miles measured on ODFW's own polygon, and ODFW rates it 66% public land. It takes in parts of these WMUs: Silver Lake (about 84%) and Sprague (about 16%). Named features inside the line fall in Lake County and Klamath County. Elevation runs from about 4,250 to 8,177 feet. The highest named points are Yamsay Mountain (8,177 ft), Hager Mountain (7,175 ft) and Fremont Point (7,133 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit DG-04 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 4,538–6,314 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,368 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,142.2 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 32%

Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 4 tanks
  • 1 springs
  • 33 stream segments
  • 7 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Yamsay Mountain (8,177 ft), Hager Mountain (7,175 ft), Fremont Point (7,133 ft), Dead Indian Mountain (7,049 ft)

Holding ground: Picketpin Flat (6,288 ft), Harvey Flat (6,084 ft), Foster Flat Meadow (5,909 ft), Driscol Spring, Squirrel Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

How to Hunt Buck Deer in Devils Garden 04: work the burns, the water and the late-season options

Burn edges and understory

Look for places where regrowth meets cover. A burn that's recovering gives deer feed, and the unburned edge gives them somewhere to hide. Glass these seams in the first and last hour, and walk the edges slowly through the middle of the day.

ODFW says older bucks are available to those with some patience, so plan to pass young bucks if that's your goal.

Water and the fire rules

In a dry fall, deer stay within a few miles of water, and they use dry seasonal creeks. Thompson Reservoir and the Sycan River are obvious places to start, along with the springs you find while scouting.

The forecast calls fire danger extreme, and says campfire restrictions will likely last through early fall. Check closures with the Forest Service and BLM before you go. ODFW notes that the area around the Wright Springs Fire is closed, but that fire sits in a different hunt area, so confirm your own map.

The area offers rifle, archery and youth hunts. The muzzleloader tag here is written for a white-tailed deer, so read it carefully.

Pack-out can be long from a roadless draw. Quarter and bag the meat, and keep it cool.

The 2025 harvest in ODFW's numbers

  • Sprague (about 16% of this area): 388 hunters, 144 animals, 37% success over 2,207 hunter days.

Oregon rules that decide your day

Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Motorized retrieval

Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.

Tagging

Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.

Leaving meat

Wasting edible meat is illegal.

Where you may not shoot

  • Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.

Deer (Buck): where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

  • Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
  • Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
  • Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.

Deer (Buck) Success Rates

Unit 76: 195 of 984 hunters, 20%; Unit 33: 144 of 388 hunters, 37%. Figures are ODFW's own 2025 harvest statistics, by WMU, because the new hunt areas have no history yet.

ODFW's eastern deer hunts carry new numbers from 2026, so the regulations list them as NEW, with no applicant history to quote. Treat any older WMU draw figures as a different hunt.
