Where to Find Pronghorn in the Silver Lake Unit: Sycan, Williamson and Hwy 31
A boundary built on rivers and forest roads
ODFW's walk begins at Silver Lake and runs southeast on Hwy 31 to Forest Road 29, then west on Forest Roads 29, 28 and 30 to Pikes Crossing. It follows the Sycan River to Powers Crossing at Teddy Powers Meadow and goes northwest to Yamsay Guard Station at the head of the Williamson River. It then follows the Williamson to the Klamath Marsh road, runs east through Bear Flat to Hwy 31 and returns to Silver Lake.
What the geography tells you, and what it doesn't
Most of the unit is public, and the named elevations run from 4250 ft up to Yamsay Mountain at 8177 ft, with Hager Mountain, Fremont Point and Dead Indian Mountain among the high points. ODFW's forecast has nothing specific for pronghorn here, and its hunt description says only that the hunt covers Units 76 and 77. Pronghorn are an open-ground animal, so the lower end of that elevation range is where to start. Everything else is scouting. Paisley, Chiloquin, Crescent and Bonanza are the nearest towns. OR 31 and the Williamson River Road are among the named routes, and the Winema and Fremont National Forests and the Lakeview BLM are the map sets to carry.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
The Silver Lake Unit, WMU 76, covers about 956 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 60% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Lake County and Klamath County. Elevation runs from about 4,250 to 8,177 feet. The highest named points are Yamsay Mountain (8,177 ft), Hager Mountain (7,175 ft) and Fremont Point (7,133 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 76 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4,566–6,682 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,419 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 955.7 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 32%
Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 4 tanks
- 1 springs
- 32 stream segments
- 7 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
