Deer (Buck) Hunting in Unit DG-03

Devils Garden 03 is almost entirely the old Fort Rock WMU, running from Silver Lake and Crescent to Mount Thielsen and the Cascade crest. ODFW reports buck ratios above objective in Lake County for this area.

Where to Find Buck Deer in Devils Garden 03: Fort Rock desert edges up to the Thielsen country

The Fort Rock herd range

Nearly all of this hunt area comes from the Fort Rock WMU. The boundary starts at Silver Lake, runs west on Hwy 31 and Bear Flat Road to US 97, then climbs to the Crater Lake National Park boundary and the Pacific Crest Trail. It returns along Hwy 58, Crescent and Fort Rock Road.

Mount Thielsen, Howlock Mountain, Cowhorn Mountain, Miller Mountain and Burn Butte are the named high points. The lowest ground sits above forty-two hundred feet.

Buck ratios and water

ODFW says buck ratios in Lake County are above management objective for this area, and that fawn ratios across the county were higher than in recent years. It expects average to slightly above average numbers of yearling bucks, with older bucks for those willing to be patient.

The forecast says deer concentrate within a few miles of water when it's dry, and will use dried-up seasonal creeks. Healthy understory and thinned areas next to cover are where to focus, especially in hot weather.

OR 31, County Road 5-10 and National Forest Development Roads 2308 and 9407 are access routes. Odell Creek and Contorta Point campgrounds sit at the western end.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's Deer Hunt Area DG-03 covers about 1,783 square miles measured on ODFW's own polygon, and ODFW rates it 71% public land. It takes in parts of these WMUs: Fort Rock (about 99%). Named features inside the line fall in Klamath County, Lake County and Douglas County. Elevation runs from about 4,283 to 8,969 feet. The highest named points are Mount Thielsen (8,969 ft), Howlock Mountain (8,296 ft) and Cowhorn Mountain (7,558 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit DG-03 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 4,520–5,686 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,971 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,782.5 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 32%

Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 173 tanks
  • 24 springs
  • 255 stream segments
  • 28 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Mount Thielsen (8,969 ft), Sawtooth Ridge (8,298 ft), Cowhorn Mountain (7,558 ft), Miller Mountain (7,492 ft)

Holding ground: Marmot Pass (5,809 ft), Bingham Meadow (5,517 ft), Crooked Meadow (5,478 ft), Bullfrog Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

How to Hunt Buck Deer in Devils Garden 03: dry-year patterns and an eye on fire closures

Hunt the water in a dry fall

ODFW says that without moisture before or during the hunt, deer turn nocturnal and hold within a few miles of water. Find the water first. Then work the cover and feed within reach of it.

Hot, dry weather means few deer on their feet at midday. Be in position before light and stay until it's too dark to see.

Check closures, then choose your season

The Lake County forecast calls fire danger extreme and says it's the hunter's job to confirm that an area is open. Campfire restrictions are likely to stay through much of early fall. Look up the Forest Service and BLM pages before every trip.

The area has a rifle hunt, a long archery season, a youth hunt and a muzzleloader hunt. The muzzleloader window comes later, so cooler weather may help, though you'll need to be closer for the shot.

Plan to be selective. Yearlings will be common, and older bucks take effort. Glass the open ground and sit above the water.

Deer taken far from the road need a plan. Quarter the animal, bag the meat and keep it shaded.

Oregon rules that decide your day

Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Motorized retrieval

Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.

Tagging

Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.

Leaving meat

Wasting edible meat is illegal.

Where you may not shoot

  • Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.

Deer (Buck): where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

  • Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
  • Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
  • Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.

Deer (Buck) Success Rates

Unit 77: 232 of 1,210 hunters, 19%. Figures are ODFW's own 2025 harvest statistics, by WMU, because the new hunt areas have no history yet.
