Elk Hunting in Unit 77
Fort Rock stretches from Silver Lake and Klamath Marsh to Mount Thielsen and the Cascade crest, mostly public ground. ODFW calls the elk stable but low, with a hunt split along US 97 and a winter closure on motor access.
Where to Find Elk in the Fort Rock Unit: either side of US 97
Two hunts split by US 97
ODFW's hunt descriptions divide this unit along US 97. The part west of the highway falls under the east central Cascades hunt, and the part east of it falls under the Paulina and east Fort Rock hunts. ODFW says elk densities are lower in the eastern part of the county and rifle seasons east of US 97 are controlled hunts. Elk are generally stable but low, and herds cover a lot of country.
The forecast says success is typically low
ODFW's forecast says the Fort Rock and Silver Lake units offer the best elk opportunity in the Lake District, but that low densities and wide-ranging herds make hunter success typically low. The named summits run from Mount Thielsen at 8969 ft down toward a low end of 4283 ft. The forecast also warns about the Cabin Lake-Silver Lake winter range closure on December 1, which limits motor access to much of the North Lake cow tag area. Klamath, Lake and Douglas counties share the unit. Crescent, La Pine, Sunriver and Chiloquin are the nearest towns, and OR 31 and county roads are among the named routes.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
The Fort Rock Unit, WMU 77, covers about 1,762 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 65% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Klamath County, Lake County and Douglas County. Elevation runs from about 4,283 to 8,969 feet. The highest named points are Mount Thielsen (8,969 ft), Howlock Mountain (8,296 ft) and Cowhorn Mountain (7,558 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 77 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4,551–5,696 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,988 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 1,763.8 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 32%
Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 172 tanks
- 24 springs
- 252 stream segments
- 28 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
