Deer (Buck) Hunting in Unit CR-01
Crooked River 01 is a new Deer Hunt Area built mostly from Maury, Ochoco and Silvies, centered on Prineville, Mitchell and Hampton Butte. Drought, a mild winter and low deer numbers shape the year.
Where to Find Buck Deer in Crooked River 01: Maury country, Hampton Butte and the water
A mix of three herd ranges
Crooked River 01 draws just under half its ground from Maury, nearly a third from Ochoco and a bit over a fifth from Silvies. It starts at Prineville, follows US 26 and the Ochoco Ranger Station Road east, and then runs south along Wolf Creek Road and the Paulina-Suplee Highway before looping back along US 20 and OR 27.
North Point, South Point, Hampton Butte, Drake Butte and Tower Point are the named high spots. Low ground sits just above twenty-nine hundred feet.
Water is the draw this year
ODFW's forecast says the winter was historically light, and that dry spring and summer left much of the forest and desert in drought. It says water will be highly valuable for wildlife this fall, as will areas with fresh growth.
That points to springs, reservoirs and green draws. Antelope Reservoir and Wiley Flat are on the map, and Elkhorn and Double Cabin campgrounds give you bases. Mitchell, Hines, Burns and Dayville are the nearest towns.
ODFW also says deer populations remain below objectives, and fawn survival decreased slightly across the three units.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
ODFW's Deer Hunt Area CR-01 covers about 2,299 square miles measured on ODFW's own polygon, and ODFW rates it 54% public land. It takes in parts of these WMUs: Maury (about 48%), Ochoco (about 30%) and Silvies (about 22%). Named features inside the line fall in Crook County, Harney County and Deschutes County. Elevation runs from about 2,912 to 6,929 feet. The highest named points are North Point (6,633 ft), South Point (6,609 ft) and Hampton Butte (6,348 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit CR-01 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 3,508–5,086 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,437 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 2,298.5 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 17%
Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 86 tanks
- 50 springs
- 595 stream segments
- 24 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Lookout Mountain (6,929 ft), South Point (6,609 ft), Hampton Buttes (6,348 ft), Drake Butte (6,261 ft)
Holding ground: Lillie Flat (5,605 ft), Horse Prairie (5,487 ft), Wiley Flat (5,287 ft)
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
How to Hunt Buck Deer in Crooked River 01: sit on water and be patient with the bucks
Hunt the water in a dry year
Drought concentrates deer. Find a spring, a pond or a green strip and watch it from a distance in the first and last hour of light. Bucks may come in when it's cool and quiet.
ODFW says buck ratios are near management objectives for the Maury and Ochoco units, with a district-wide average of twenty bucks per hundred does. That's a decent herd structure but not a high one.
Take your time with the bucks
The forecast says recent surveys found a good number of mature bucks with strong horn growth. It advises taking your time and looking at several bucks. The light winter also means more yearling bucks, so you'll see small ones.
The rifle hunt is short, so scout early. The bow season is long, and the archery tag here is for a white-tailed deer, so read the tag.
Check land manager sites for fire and closure information. The forecast mentions access restrictions across the region.
Plan your pack-out on steep or rough ground, and take game bags and a partner if the haul is long.

Oregon rules that decide your day
Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.
Legal shooting hours
Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.
Motorized retrieval
Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.
Tagging
Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.
Leaving meat
Wasting edible meat is illegal.
Where you may not shoot
- Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.
Deer (Buck): where to put the shot
Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.
Shots to refuse
- Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
- Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
- Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.
Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.
Deer (Buck) Success Rates
Unit 36: 79 of 221 hunters, 36%; Unit 37: 318 of 1,473 hunters, 22%; Unit 72: 351 of 739 hunters, 47%. Figures are ODFW's own 2025 harvest statistics, by WMU, because the new hunt areas have no history yet.
