Pronghorn Hunting in Unit 36

Maury is a pronghorn unit of Crook and Deschutes counties between Brothers, Prineville Reservoir and Paulina. ODFW says the herd is steady with a very high fawn crop, but drought has dried many waterholes.

Where to Find Pronghorn in the Maury Unit: around the water that's left

Clumped around water

ODFW's forecast says the lack of winter snow gave high overwinter survival and a very high fawn crop. It also says the desert slipped back into drought, and many waterholes and playas that held water last year are now dry. Pronghorn distribution is clumpy around the water sources that remain. Finding water and quality feed is the key to success this season, and that's the most useful thing you can know before you scout.

The ground inside the boundary

The boundary starts at Brothers on US 20, runs to OR 27 and Prineville Dam, follows the Prineville Reservoir, Crooked River and Beaver Creek to Paulina, and returns along Grindstone Creek Road, Twelvemile Creek Road and the Camp Creek-Glass Buttes road. Named summits are Hampton Butte at 6348 ft, Drake Butte, Tower Point, Arrowwood Point and Alkali Butte. Prineville, Mitchell, Redmond and Terrebonne are the nearest towns, and US 20, OR 27, OR 380 and Schraeder Road are among the named roads. The Ochoco National Forest and Prineville BLM maps cover the unit, and much of it is public land. Dry waterholes change the picture from last year, so scout fresh instead of trusting old spots.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

The Maury Unit, WMU 36, covers about 1,100 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 56% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Crook County and Deschutes County. Elevation runs from about 3,236 to 6,348 feet. The highest named points are Hampton Butte (6,348 ft), Drake Butte (6,261 ft) and Tower Point (6,078 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit 36 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 3,929–5,846 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,628 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,100.2 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • BLM — 15%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 17%

Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 49 tanks
  • 34 springs
  • 290 stream segments
  • 12 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Hampton Buttes (6,348 ft), Drake Butte (6,261 ft), Mule Deer Ridge (6,171 ft), Tower Point (6,078 ft)

Holding ground: Lillie Flat (5,605 ft), Wiley Flat (5,287 ft), Telephone Flat (5,235 ft)

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
