How to Hunt Elk in Unit 16D

Unit 16D's combination of road-accessible forest and wilderness backcountry supports multiple hunting approaches.

Road-Accessible Timber Hunting

The Gila NF road network from Reserve provides access to productive elk habitat without a backcountry commitment. Drive forest roads before dawn, then set up on ridges overlooking meadow openings and old burns. Glass at first light and work calling sequences from elevated positions where sound carries across drainages.

Wilderness Edge Strategy

Pack in 2-4 miles past the Gila Wilderness boundary for significantly lower pressure and better bull quality. Elk that have been pushed from accessible areas stage in the wilderness fringe. Base camp near water and work the surrounding ridges and parks.

Rut Calling in the Mogollons

September and early October rut hunting in the Mogollon Mountains is intense. The dense elk population creates aggressive bull competition. Set up on ridges above meadow parks and work cow calls to draw bulls from timbered drainages. The steep terrain amplifies bugles and allows you to locate bulls at distance before committing to a stalk.

Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Motorized retrieval

New Mexico has no general off-road retrieval allowance. Stay on designated routes and plan a pack-out.

Tag the animal before moving it and keep the licence and tag on your person.

Leaving meat

Wasting edible meat is illegal.

Where you may not shoot

Occupied structures — No shooting within 150 yards of an occupied dwelling without permission, and no shooting from or across a public road.

Elk: where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body. That is lungs, and on a quartering-away angle it picks up the far shoulder.

Shots to refuse

No straight-on and no straight-away shots. An elk's chest is deep and the margin is small.
Nothing standing behind or overlapping the animal you picked. A pass-through kills the elk behind it too.
Your maximum range is the farthest you have put three shots in a paper plate off the sticks you are actually carrying. Not the farthest you have ever hit anything.
Scope on 3–4x. A herd fills a 12x field of view and you lose the animal you picked.

Identification:On an antlerless tag, legal means no antler of any kind through the skin. A spike looks exactly like a cow until it turns its head. If you can't see the head, don't shoot.

Unit 16D provides mule deer hunting across the Gila National Forest around Reserve in southwest New Mexico. The terrain spans from desert grassland and PJ-covered foothills at 4,000 feet to ponderosa and oak woodlands at 8,000 feet in the Mogollon Mountains. Canyon Breaks and Rimrock

Where drainages cut through the foothills, rocky rimrock and canyon breaks create classic mule deer bedding terrain. Bucks favor ledges and rimrock shelves with good visibility and multiple escape routes. Glass canyon walls and rim edges at first light for bedded or transitioning deer.

San Francisco River Bottoms

The riparian corridor along the San Francisco River near Reserve holds deer year-round. Agricultural fields and irrigated pastures along the river draw deer from surrounding hills, and the cottonwood bottoms provide travel corridors between higher-elevation habitat patches.

How to Hunt Mule Deer in Unit 16D

The Gila foothills offer productive mule deer hunting with a mix of glassing and spot-and-stalk approaches.

Canyon Rim Glassing

Position on canyon rims and elevated ridges at first light. Glass opposite slopes, rimrock shelves, and draw bottoms for deer transitioning between feeding and bedding areas. The Gila's broken terrain provides long sight lines from good vantage points, and bucks are often visible on open slopes during the first and last hours of daylight.

Oak Brush Stalking

When bucks bed in dense Gambel oak on north-facing slopes, a careful stalk through the oak brush can produce close-range opportunities. Move slowly uphill through the oak, pausing frequently to glass ahead. Bucks often hold tight in thick cover and can be approached within bow or close rifle range.

Water Source Ambush

Stock tanks and springs in the PJ foothills concentrate deer during dry autumn conditions. Identify active water sources by tracks and droppings, then set up downwind during afternoon hours. The arid lower-elevation country makes water a reliable draw.
