Where to Find Pronghorn in Unit 251: Stone Cabin and Reveille Valleys

Stone Cabin Valley, Reveille Valley and the pivots

Most of Unit 251's antelope can be found regularly in Stone Cabin and Reveille valleys. NDOW adds a recent shift: in the last few years more animals have been living near the pivots close to the test site entrance and in Stone Cabin Valley. If you only have a few days, that's where the sheet points first.

Springs, ponds and water in August

In August, antelope here are usually tied to water. Sources range from perennial streams to small springs and agricultural or livestock water, and NDOW says small, localized bunches of antelope live around scattered springs and livestock ponds across the unit. The sheet's advice is to start with a map that marks water sources; from there you can build a picture of where to look before you drive a mile.

Ralston and Railroad Valleys

Ralston and Railroad valleys also hold antelope. Densities there are usually lower than in Stone Cabin and Reveille, but NDOW notes they tend to see less hunter pressure. That trade is worth weighing if the main valleys feel crowded.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A pronghorn tag for this group is good in unit 251, about 1,327 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Nye County and Esmeralda County. The named ranges inside the line are Reveille Range, Goldfield Hills, Monitor Hills and Kawich Range. The highest named points are Kawich Peak (9,383 ft), Reveille Peak (8,809 ft) and Mount Clayton (7,867 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 5,491 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 20 springs inside it, Hyde Spring, Coyote Hole Spring, Black Rock Spring and Radium Spring among them.

The lay of it

  • 5,271–7,056 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,863 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,327.2 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Water on the ground

  • 31 tanks
  • 19 springs
  • 594 stream segments
  • 1 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
