Where to Find Desert Bighorn in Units 134, 251: Palisade Mesa, Twin Springs and Citadel Mountain
Palisade Mesa and Twin Springs in a warm fall
NDOW's sheet lets the weather pick your starting point. If the season stays warm, sheep could still be tied to water, and most of the water lies around Palisade Mesa and the Twin Springs area. In a dry, warm year, that's the place to begin.
Citadel Mountain, The Wall and Black Beauty Mesa once it cools
Cool weather or a round of rain changes the picture, because the sheep then spread widely. The sheet's list shifts to Citadel Mountain, The Wall, Black Beauty Mesa and the country north of Twin Springs Slough. The biologist also warns against following the crowd. Many hunters concentrate on Palisade Mesa, but rams tend to drift into other areas during November, and a hunter who stays where sheep gathered earlier in the year will miss a lot of animals.
Goblin Knobs and Fang Ridge in the Reveille Range
Unit 251 was added to Unit 134 recently, and its sheep densities are low. If you want to look outside Unit 134, NDOW suggests Goblin Knobs and Fang Ridge in the Reveille Range. Kawich Peak and Reveille Peak are the tallest named summits inside the group, though the sheet doesn't point hunters toward either one.
The ground NDOW draws for this tag
A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in units 134 and 251, about 2,146 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Nye County and Esmeralda County. The named ranges inside the line are Reveille Range, Goldfield Hills, Monitor Hills and Kawich Range. The highest named points are Kawich Peak (9,383 ft), Reveille Peak (8,809 ft) and Mount Clayton (7,867 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,711 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 56 springs inside it, Briar Spring, Thorn Spring, Sandy Summit Spring and Hyde Spring among them.
