Where to Find Desert Bighorn in Unit 207: Volcano Canyon, Muller Mountain and Pilot Mountain
Volcano Canyon and the southern Gabbs Valley Range
NDOW's sheet gives a short list, and most of it sits in the southern Gabbs Valley Range. Start near the Santa Fe and Table Mountain water developments, the only water sources the sheet calls out by name. From there, work Volcano Canyon and the ridges, side canyons and peaks around it. East of Volcano Canyon the sheet adds New York Canyon, Table Mountain and Muller Mountain, so one block of country can fill several days of looking.
Water Canyon and Telephone Canyon on Pilot Mountain
Pilot Mountain is the other half of the unit, and NDOW points to two drainages on it: Water Canyon and Telephone Canyon. GNIS names Pilot Peak and Little Pilot Peak among the summits inside the unit line, but the sheet's advice is about the canyons, not the tops.
That's the whole of NDOW's guidance on where to look. The sheet doesn't describe how sheep shift through the season or how they react to weather here. What it does give you is a tight set of names: two water developments, Volcano and New York canyons, Table and Muller mountains, and the two Pilot Mountain canyons. Mark every one of them on your map before you leave home, and use the two-track network to reach the base of each.
The ground NDOW draws for this tag
A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in unit 207, about 536 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Mineral County. The named ranges inside the line are Pilot Mountains and Cedar Mountains. The highest named points are Pilot Peak (9,170 ft), Muller Mountain (8,316 ft) and Little Pilot Peak (8,067 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,816 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 48 springs inside it, Simon Spring, Graham Spring, Douglas Spring and Betty Spring among them.
