Where to Find Desert Bighorn Sheep in Units 162 - 163: Morey Peak to Warm Springs in the Hot Creek Range

The Hot Creek Range in Unit 163

Most of this group's desert bighorn live in Unit 163, in the Hot Creek Range. NDOW says the highest densities run from Morey Peak south to Warm Springs on the east side of the range. Its suggested starting point is the south end of the unit, around Rawhide and Warm Springs.

Two other areas hold good numbers of sheep on a regular basis. One is the entire length of Hot Creek Canyon. The other is the Box Canyon area on the west side of the Hot Creeks. Between those and the Morey Peak to Warm Springs stretch, you have most of the sheep country the sheet describes.

Hunts Canyon, Horse Heaven and Salisbury Wash in Unit 162

Unit 162 holds fewer sheep. NDOW lists the Hunts Canyon and Horse Heaven area and Salisbury Wash, plus the west side of Box Canyon on occasion. The sheet doesn't say which range those places sit in, so find them on a map and check them against the unit line before you build a hunt around them.

The season is late, opening near the end of November and running to New Year's Day. The sheet doesn't describe how sheep shift through that window, so its named areas are where your glassing time should go.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in units 162 and 163, about 3,123 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Nye County and Eureka County. The named ranges inside the line are Red Mountains, Hot Creek Range, McKinney Mountains, Antelope Range, Park Range and Monitor Range. The highest named points are Table Mountain (10,633 ft), Summit Mountain (10,443 ft) and Tulle Mountain (10,364 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 5,586 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 168 springs inside it, Paroni Spring, Flask Spring, Studhorse Spring and Hot Creek Valley Spring among them.
