Where to Find Pronghorn in Units 131, 145, 163 - 164: Railroad Valley, Jakes Valley and the Alfalfa Country

Valley by valley, unit by unit

NDOW's pronghorn sheet for this group is a list of valleys, and it's specific about which unit each one falls in. In Unit 131, look at the north end of Little Smokey Valley and at Jakes Valley. Railroad Valley spans Units 131 and 164. Antelope Valley runs through Units 145 and 163. Unit 163 also has West Little Fish Lake Valley, Stonecabin Valley and the Hot Creek valleys, and Unit 164 adds Big Sand Springs Valley.

Pronghorn live in every valley in the group, but the sheet says concentrations run higher in the valleys tied to alfalfa farming. That gives you a quick way to rank the list. Find the irrigated ground first, then hunt the public land around it.

Water in archery and rifle season

NDOW's other pointer is water. Antelope here are usually concentrated around it during both the archery and the rifle seasons, which on this group fall between early August and early September. The sheet doesn't name individual sources, so a scouting trip to your chosen valley before the season, looking for which water is actually holding animals that summer, is time well spent. Pair the two clues and you have a plan: farm valleys first, water within them second.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A pronghorn tag for this group is good in units 131, 145, 163 and 164, about 4,399 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Nye County, Eureka County and White Pine County. The named ranges inside the line are Mokomoke Mountains, Mountain Boy Range, Hot Creek Range, Fish Creek Range, Duckwater Hills and Pancake Range. The highest named points are Currant Mountain (11,479 ft), Duckwater Peak (11,151 ft) and Mount Hamilton (10,733 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 5,234 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 224 springs inside it, Giroux Springs, Rock Spring, Little Warm Spring and Collins Spring among them.
